U.S. officer quits after harassment over Puerto Rico shirt

An Illinois police officer has resigned after being criticized for not intervening as a man harassed a woman for wearing a Puerto Rican flag shirt. In the video, Irizarry is approached by a man, identified by authorities as 62-year-old Timothy Trybus, who tells her she should not be wearing the Puerto Rican flag shirt in the USA, and asks "Are you a citizen?" The Cook County State's Attorney's Office said Timothy Trybus, 62, has been charged with two counts of felony hate crime. The intoxicated individual involved in the incident was arrested and charged with assault and disorderly conduct.

He has a bail hearing Friday afternoon in Skokie.

The Forest Preserves of Cook County confirmed that Officer Patrick Connor no longer works for the department following an incident filmed on June 14, which went viral almost a month later.

But the video makes clear that we all have to step up to defend the United States from this tide of bullying, misogyny, homophobia, and xenophobia, and stand up for what America is really all about.

Here's where we might not all agree, but I beg those who don't want to see this lone Chicago incident connected to President Donald Trump to at least consider that Gutierrez might have a point.

Irizarry had a permit for the space, officials said, and she says in the video she was there for a birthday party.

"Officer, officer, I feel highly uncomfortable", Irizarry tells Connor, who does not appear to respond to her as he is addressed, and can be seen turning his back and walking toward his police auto. The man resumes his abuse, saying: "You're not American".

The video shows Trybus continuing to confront Irizarry and her friends for about 10 minutes before additional police officers arrive and eventually arrest him.

The video of the exchange sparked outrage, and even Puerto Rico's governor, Ricardo Rosselló, weighed in and called it "appalling" and he said "a Puerto Rican woman was brutally harassed by a bigot while an officer did not interfere". "We are looking at ways to improve all aspects of employee training", said Cook County Forest Preserves General Superintendent Arnold Randall. She had appealed to Officer Connor for help, but he appears to not respond.

The officer was already on the scene for a separate call, Irizarry said. "People have just as much right to be here as you do, and when you're drunk you don't belong here".

Finally an uninvolved bystander, who had been watching the scene unfold, called for more police.

Connor's resignation was "a commonsense decision after his inaction and failure to serve Cook County", Cook County Commissioner Jesus Garcia said, according to The Chicago-Sun Times. In the background, a police officer is standing outside the park pavilion.

In an earlier statement, the police said that an investigation had been launched and the officer had been placed on desk duty. This is not the America we all believe in'.

Garcia posted a statement in which he said, "The Puerto Rican community deserves an apology and the young woman deserves justice from the Cook County Forest Preserve and the Cook County Justice System".
