House Panels Give Ex-FBI Lawyer Two Last Chances to Testify

  • Report: 2 House Committees Will Interview Lisa Page This Week

Rep. Doug Collins, R-Ga., said FBI lawyer Lisa Page must provide answers about statements she made in texts between herself and FBI agent Peter Strzok, as part of House committees' investigation into bias at the Justice Department. Page and Strzok both worked on the FBI investigation into Democrat Hillary Clinton's emails and, later, special counsel Robert Mueller's Russian Federation investigation. Both were removed from the Mueller probe previous year after the Justice Department's internal watchdog made the special counsel aware of the anti-Trump text messages.

According to the Washington Examiner, Page's attorney confirmed her client's plan to comply with Congressional requests and appear before the House Judiciary Committee at an unspecified date.

Page and fellow Federal Bureau of Investigation employee Peter Strzok were involved in an extramarital affair.

There was, however, one crucial document Page lacked before her planned appearance-the testimony of Federal Bureau of Investigation agent Peter Strzok.

Attorney Amy Jeffress told Fox News that Page would not appear on Capitol Hill on Wednesday because they did not have enough time to prepare.

"It appears that Lisa Page has something to hide", Goodlatte said.

"This investigation is a political charade-a platform to elevate far-right conspiracy theories and undermine the Special Counsel's ongoing criminal investigation of the President and his campaign aides, which has already produced five guilty pleas and criminal charges against 23 individuals and entities", said Representative Jerrold Nadler, the Ranking Member of the Committee on the Judiciary. One of the messages included a reference of stopping Trump for winning the election, but the Justice Department Inspector General's report released last month found no bias existed.

Jeffress accused the panels of using unnecessary "bullying tactics" to push Page into an interview immediately, especially when "she has offered to voluntarily appear before the committees later this month".

"Americans across the country are alarmed at the bias exhibited by top officials at the Justice Department and Federal Bureau of Investigation, and it is imperative Congress conduct vigorous oversight to ensure that never happens again".

Trump torched Page and Strzok on Tuesday while aboard Air Force One headed to Brussels.

Mr. Strzok is scheduled to testify Wednesday before both committees.

President Trump joined the conversation Tuesday on Twitter, tweeting out about Page.

He was interviewed privately by lawmakers on the two committees for 11 hours June 27.

"Americans across the country are alarmed at the bias exhibited by top officials at the Justice Department and FBI", Goodlatte said.

House Republicans have been nevertheless aggressively pushing for interviews - including by serving Strzok with a subpoena for public testimony Thursday after declining to release a transcript of his closed-door testimony last month as his lawyer and Democrats demanded.
