USA threatened nations over breastfeeding resolution

  • US turned to threats to fight breast-feeding resolution report

As for the Trump team's push to stop the World Health Assembly from advising women to breastfeed and calling out misleading marketing of substitutes, Berkeley's Gertler said he was "deeply disgusted" by the revelation.

Then, when those attempts failed, the US delegation reportedly intimidated the country, Ecuador, initially sponsoring the resolution with trade threats, resulting in Ecuador dropping out. Tiny Ecuador, which had moved it, was threatened by trade measures and the withdrawal of military aid, and it was left to Russian Federation to step into the breach to hold off the bully.

According to a Sunday New York Times scoop, the President Donald Trump's delegation to the United Nations-affiliated World Health Assembly recently bullied smaller, less wealthy nations in an ultimately failed effort to crush a resolution urging mothers to breastfeed infants.

"The failing NY Times Fake News story today about breast feeding must be called out", Trump tweeted.

The US State Department has refused to comment on the report. "These women should have the choice and access to alternatives for the health of their babies, and not be stigmatized for the ways in which they are able to do so", a spokesman told The Times. It is also beneficial for mothers, leading to less risk of heart disease, Type 2 diabetes, ovarian cancer, and breast cancer.

For instance, "mothers who must return to work shortly postpartum face enormous challenges in establishing lactation and continuing to breastfeed as recommended", she said. The CDC found that only about half of all babies are still being breastfed at six months.

He added that although the group didn't find negative effects on infant mortality on populations with clean water, that "doesn't mean there's no difference between breast milk and formula".

The WHO said its resolution was aimed, in part, at reducing these barriers and putting more support systems in place to allow for successful breastfeeding - along with ensuring that formula can not be advertised in deceiving ways. "[The resolution was just] embracing the science that breastfeeding is the best form of nutrition for a baby".

World Breastfeeding Week is celebrated during the first week in August every year in more than 170 countries to encourage breastfeeding and improve the health of babies around the world.

The Trump administration also denied that US officials had threatened trade sanctions in the debate over the resolution, AP reported.

Aware of this growing aggressiveness, World Health Organization tried to get agreement for a standard resolution to promote breastfeeding in member countries and to continue to limit false advertising of the formula monopolies.

A spokesperson for the Department of Health and Human Services said to CNN, "The issues being debated were not about whether one supports breastfeeding. Neither is the availability of infant formula", said Sullivan.

According to Suzanne Ehlers, president and CEO of reproductive rights organization PAI, the Trump administration has aggressively cut back USA support for public-health efforts aimed at women.

But research has long shown that breastfeeding is the best way to nourish an infant, boost their immune system, prevent them from being sick or becoming overweight or obese and forge bonding between mother and child.

UNICEF and World Health Organization also recommend exclusive breastfeeding from within an hour of birth until the baby is 6 months old.
