Avenatti on Twitter cited an official statement from Daniels saying that because of her arrest Thursday night's performance was canceled. Avenatti did not deny that Daniels had allowed herself to be touched.

Klein, the city attorney, is reviewing their cases to see if they were regular performers or not.

"We will vehemently contest all charges", he said.

Charging documents, however, say that Clifford reportedly groped an undercover cop while at the club on Wednesday. She is also accused of fondling the breasts of women in the audience, according to the report.

Columbus police conducted the undercover vice operation, calling it "part of a long-term investigation into allegations of human trafficking, prostitution and other vice related violations". No times are listed for her performances and a representative of Platinum Plus would only say they are at night. When officers witnessed those activities, three detectives approached the stage.

An Ohio law known as the Community Defense Act prohibits anyone who isn't a family member to touch a nude or semi-nude dancer. She was released on $6,054 bail and will be arraigned Friday morning. Daniels started performing at about 11:30 p.m. Wednesday, according to an affidavit filed in Franklin County Municipal Court.

Later Thursday morning, Avenatti noted, "My client @StormyDaniels will issue a plea of "Not Guilty" to the three misdemeanor charges".

MSNBC's Stephanie Ruhle spoke to Avenatti today about his view that the arrest was a "politically motivated" setup against his client.

A prosecutor's memo provided by Avenatti says an OH illegal touching law can't be enforced because Daniels has only appeared once at the Columbus club. "There has to be a better goal for such resources". My office was not involved in this sting operation, so any additional questions about it must be directed to the Columbus Division of Police.

A judge has already signed off on the dismissal of charges.

The AP reports that a Columbus police spokeswoman didn't immediately respond to a message seeking comment.

Another officer in the back of the club went to get backup before arresting Daniels, who was released on bond early Thursday.

"It reeks of desperation", he tweeted.

The Columbus Dispatch reported a year ago that the 2007 law, introduced by a conservative religious group, was seldom enforced.

"This was a complete set up", Michael Avenatti, Daniels' attorney, tweeted.

The lawyer said Daniels, whose real name is Stephanie Clifford, is expected to be charged with one or more misdemeanors. "I deeply apologize to my fans in Columbus".

Daniels has been embroiled in a legal controversy with Trump over their alleged 2006 encounter, which he has repeatedly denied.

Daniels has said Trump's personal attorney Michael Cohen paid her the $130,000.
