Pompeo, who did not meet with leader Kim Jong-un on this trip, could point to no concrete achievement from the talks aside from an agreement for the two sides to meet around July 12 in Panmunjom, the border village between the two Koreas, to discuss returning the remains of USA soldiers from the 1950-53 Korean War.
U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Saturday said the Trump administration considered the meeting "very important" as the "first senior-level face-to-face meeting" between Pyongyang and Washington since June's DPRK-U.S. summit.
After his talks in Pyongyang, Pompeo stopped in Tokyo and met with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and planned to brief him on his discussion with North Korean officials.
Update at 2000 KST: This article has been amended with the latest developments on Pompeo's visit North Korean and US officials held a second day of meetings in Pyongyang on Saturday, with both sides saying there several key issues they need to "clarify".
'If those requests were gangster-like, the world is a gangster, ' Pompeo said, noting that numerous U.N. Security Council resolutions have demanded that the North rid itself of nuclear weapons and end its ballistic missile program.
North Korea's foreign ministry took exception to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo's effort to secure concrete commitments to the promise that Mr Kim made at the summit with Mr Trump.
The DPRK felt deep regret over the attitude of the USA delegation led by Pompeo at the high-level talks held Friday and Saturday with DPRK officials, a spokesman of the country's Foreign Ministry said.
The statement shows that Kim is willing to test Trump's patience and not bargain away his arsenal without sufficient security guarantees.
Mr Pompeo said that in past two decades, United States bilateral trade with Vietnam had grown 8,000 per cent, and American companies had poured in billions of dollars of investments.
According to the Pentagon, North Korean officials have indicated in the past that they have the remains of as many as 200 USA troops.
However, many lawmakers on both sides of the aisle defended the drills as a necessary deterrent, and say they need to prepare for a potential conflict on the peninsula.
The spokesman also blasted the United States for "making great publicity" about the suspension of its joint military drills with South Korea, saying that it was hardly a concession because it was a "highly reversible step which can be resumed anytime, at any moment as all of its military force remains intact in its previously held positions without scrapping even a rifle". There are signs the meeting did not go as planned.
The U.S. envoy did not meet with North Korea's leader during this round of talks, but the U.S. State Department said he arrived bearing a letter from Trump addressed to Kim Jong Un.
Kim Yong Chol later said that "there are things that I have to clarify' to which Pompeo responded that "there are things that I have to clarify as well'". They cheat and President Trump wants to change the economic relationship with China.
The North's statement, coming so soon after Pompeo's trip, was sure to fuel growing skepticism in the US over how serious Kim is about giving up his nuclear arsenal. "When we spoke to them about the scope of denuclearization, they did not push back", Pompeo told the press conference.
North Korea called the outcome of the discussion "worrisome" and argued that the "cancerous issues" the USA delegation raised were the same ones that had "amplified" distrust and the risk of war with past administrations, resulting in previous talks ending in failure. "The miracle could be yours; it can be your miracle in North Korea as well".
Trump also expressed doubts about Beijing's attitude toward the negotiations between Washington and Pyongyang, suggesting that China could play a counterproductive role due the trade war that has seen the world's two largest economies slap tariffs on each other's goods.
