Former student athletes say Ohio State University doctor groped men for years

  • Ohio lawmaker accused of ignoring abuse of Ohio State student-athletes

U.S. Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, a former standout college wrestler at the University of Wisconsin and later a coach at Ohio State, knew when he was at the university that the doctor was groping male wrestlers, said ex-wrestlers Mike DiSabato and Dunyasha Yetts. The congressman said he does remember Dr. Strauss, but echoed his spokesman by insisting he knew nothing of the alleged abuse.

I've talked to other coaches, and they didn't know of any abuse. "I believe him. I believe him 100 percent".

President Donald Trump defended Jordan at a campaign rally in Montana on Thursday, saying he believed the Ohio Republican and did not believe the accusations. No question in my mind.

He added, "We not only stand by him, but believe him to be a man of character and honor, and Congress would be well served to have more Jim Jordans serving on Capitol Hill". Yetts says it was far from the only discussion players had with Jordan, and that it was commonly known Strauss showered with players though he didn't work out. "I am not a flawless person, but ask any of the wrestlers and they will tell you everybody knew about Doc", he said. "And look, if there are people who are abused, then that's bad and we want justice to happen". Shine was cited in at least four lawsuits alleging sexual harassment or racial discrimination and was largely considered unhirable after his unceremonious exit from Fox News.

The president praised Jordan ― a Trump ally and co-founder of the powerful, conservative House Freedom Caucus ― calling him "an outstanding man".

Coleman, who roomed with Jordan during team trips and says he considers the lawmaker a friend, said in an interview with The Wall Street Journal that unless Jordan has "dementia", he knew about the allegations surrounding Dr. Richard Strauss. He's taken leading roles in fighting the Affordable Care Act and in pushing back against the government's Russian Federation investigation, most recently interrogating Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein in committee. "We all did", Dailey told NBC.

Before meeting with university officials, he said, he had contacted Mr. Jordan, with whom he said he spoke regularly.

This came as a fourth former Ohio State University wrestler, Shawn Dailey, came forward and said he'd been abused.

"Congressman Jordan never saw any abuse, never heard about any abuse and never had any abuse reported to him during his time as a coach at Ohio State", the spokesman, Ian Fury, said in a statement.

Four former OSU wrestlers have now gone public with their stories, detailing alleged sexual molestation by Strauss during medical appointments to NBC News. "It was very common knowledge in the locker room that if you went to Dr. Strauss for anything, you would have to pull your trousers down".

Dailey's accusations come after other university wrestlers said Jordan knew about Strauss, who died in 2005, and did not act. "Jim Jordan has an obligation to cooperate fully with that investigation".

Fury said the office can't find a record of those requests but remains willing to assist investigators. "But to say that he had no knowledge of it, I would say that's kind of hurtful".
