Former prime minister Najib Razak was seen leaving his home at Langgak Duta here at 8.50pm tonight in a white multi-purpose vehicle (MPV), accompanied by another auto and two motorcycle escorts.

Two other charges allege that Najib committed "criminal breach of trust" in dealing with a further $5 million.

Al Jazeera's Florence Looi reports from Kuala Lumpur.

Thomas was speaking after he led the prosecution team in the case against former prime minister Najib Razak, who was charged with three counts of criminal breach of trust and one count of abuse of power in connection with a transaction involving SRC International, a former unit of 1MDB. Each charge has a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison.

Nonetheless, the High Court subsequently lowered the bail amount to RM1 million and allowed Najib to pay half of the sum on Wednesday, with the balance to be settled by 3pm next Monday (Jul 9), reported Free Malaysia Today.

He was arrested Tuesday by anti-graft officials over a suspicious transfer of $10.4 million (U.S.) into his bank accounts from SRC International, a former unit of the 1MDB state investment fund that USA investigators say was looted of billions by associates of Najib. Some members of Najib's Umno party chanted and held up placards in solidarity with their former leader.

Since his loss at the polls to mentor-turned-foe Mahathir, Najib has been barred from leaving the country and had millions of dollars of items seized from properties linked to his family.

While many Malaysians are engrossed with the updates following Najib's arrest, a close family member has made a decision to request the people's sympathy over the man's arrest through a social media post.

"Let investigations be carried out".

"As a normal human being, I am not flawless but believe me that the accusations against me and my family are not all true", he said.

A spokesman for Najib said the SRC charges and the 1MDB investigations against the former leader were "politically motivated", and that Najib will contest these charges and clear his name in court.

Wednesday's court hearing was the latest step in a quick-moving investigation into alleged wrongdoing by Najib, his family and many of his close political and business allies.

The Malaysian government under Najib was accused of blocking probes into 1MDB and not cooperating with foreign agencies investigating the fund, but local probes have been reopened since Mahathir came to power.
