Switzerland too slow, lacked emotion in loss to Sweden - Vladimir Petkovic

The World Cup 2018 last 16 showdown between Sweden and Switzerland promises to be an absorbing contest.

The RB Leipzig playmaker's tame effort was heading straight at Yann Sommer until Switzerland defender Manuel Akanji stuck out a foot, sending the ball looping beyond his wrong-footed goalkeeper.

England and Colombia may have added motivation for their last-16 clash after watching Sweden struggle in front of goal and win the match only through a deflected strike.

A fortuitous Emil Forsberg deflection gifted Sweden the lead with 66 minutes on the clock and Janne Andersson's men held out for a historic victory.

Sweden will be looking to book their place in the quarter-finals for the first time since 1994, but will face a tough challenge against fellow European side Switzerland in Saint Petersburg on Tuesday afternoon.

Emil Forsberg delivered the victor in the 66th minute when the RB Leipzig winger's shot from the edge of the penalty area was deflected past Yann Sommer.

That knocked Switzerland out of the tournament and keeps Sweden's World Cup dreams alive. "To experience this, to fire Sweden into a quarter-finals together with this group, it feels fantastic", said Forsberg.

They broke through the Swiss cordon in extra time when the substitute Martin Olsson was released into space and brought down just outside the box.

The Swedes improbably advanced to the Knockout Round after a surprising and convincing 3-0 win over Mexico to win Group F and take on the Swiss, who were runners-up to Brazil in Group E. Svensson came on early in the second half to help the Blågult defeat El Tri and set up their first Knockout Round appearance since 2006.

Switzerland was fortunate to still be alive at that point.

Michael Lang is expected to replace captain Stephan Lichtsteiner while Johan Djourou or Nico Elvedi is expected to replace Fabian Schar as both the players are suspended.

In team news, Sebastian Larsson will be unavailable through suspension.

Albin Ekdal managed to outdo his team-mate with an even worse miss as he blazed a chance over from close range just before half-time.

Olsson was pushed in the back by Lang with only Sommer to beat in injury-time, with Skomina initially awarding a penalty but changing his decision to a free-kick after he consulted the replay.
