  • Brazil v Mexico Five-time winners must overcome El Tri persistence to keep World Cup bid alive

Neymar's influence was clear in stats that showed that in Russian Federation he has attempted more shots and created more goalscoring chances than any other player.

Against Mexico, it took some time for Brazil to find their rhythm, like it has been the team's usual pattern in the tournament.

Mexico started the game in bright fashion and were level until the 55th minute when Neymar converted Willian's cross. And it was the right foot that helped to break through Mexico's stern resistance in Samara.

Brazil's Neymar celebrates at the end of the round of 16 match between Brazil and Mexico at the 2018 soccer World Cup in the Samara Arena on Monday. Neymar got behind the Mexican defence and tried to find the far corner, only for Ochoa's fingertips to put the ball into the path of an onrushing Firmino to tap it in.

Brazil awoke from their early slumber late in the opening half, but Neymar's angled drive was blocked by Guillermo Ochoa and striker Gabriel Jesus saw the 'keeper block his drive after a smart one-two.

It looked like Neymar's game - or even his World Cup - could be over with 20 minutes to go. It turned out to be pure histrionics.

Yet the less attractive side of his game was also on display, as he writhed on the floor, seemingly in agony, after Mexico's Miguel Layun had made the slightest contact with his ankle, before making an immediate and miraculous recovery.

While Layun didn't receive a caution for his action, he clearly stepped on Neymar and enabled a stoppage that halted some of Mexico's momentum.

"I think it's more an attempt to undermine me than anything else", Neymar responded.

He also said that "for a generation of Mexican players, this was the last opportunity to reach a World Cup quarter-final in their prime".

'We lost our style due to the referee giving too much stoppage time.

The game was done and dusted and so was Mexico's World Cup.

Once Brazil took the lead, they dominated the play.

Neymar's brilliance didn't stop there. "The coach is looking for this", the Brazil coach asked rhetorically.

Mexico coach Juan Carlos Osorio had a point when he said the forward's antics were "very negative for the kids watching". "It's not a sin".

After a scoreless first half, El Tri conceded its first goal in the 51st minute of the match before Brazil scored again in the 88th minute, ensuring that there would be no way for Mexico to force a draw and extend the match into extra time. He said video evidence would show Layun had offended but preferred to concentrate on aspects of Neymar's performance.
