Under Trump, ICE is despised and divided

  • An encampment with the Occupy ICE movement grew in June 2018 in front of Portland's US Immigration and Customs Enforcement field offices

That idea was the topic of two Saturday morning tweets from Trump, who reassured "the courageous men and women of ICE, do not worry or lose your spirit" and said they were doing a "fantastic job".

A former spokesman for US Immigration and Customs Enforcement said it "doesn't make sense" to get rid of ICE despite public criticism of the agency, and that agents "have a rough time with this too" in the midst of backlash over the separation of undocumented families at the border.

She added: "And that's why I believe you should get rid of it, start over, reimagine it and build something that actually works".

His tweets follow Democratic Sen.

The Trump administration's crackdown on immigration has prompted some Democrats and activists on the left to call for ICE to be abolished.

Both Democrats' comments came after Tuesday's primary win by progressive, Democratic Socialist candidate Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez over Democratic incumbent Rep. Joe Crowley for New York's 14th congressional district.

"I hope they keep thinking about it because they're going to get beaten so badly", he said. She said she was anxious about the children taken from their families, and their parents left without knowing how to find them.

"Referring to Schwab's description of the statements in question, ICE spokeswoman Liz Johnson told CNN, 'We disagree with Mr. Schwab on this issue and dispute his characterization".

An Inspector General's report published this week by the Department of Homeland Security, the federal agency in which ICE is housed, found that ICE does an inadequate job of inspecting and maintaining its facilities, and fails to correct poor practices.

"Because of (ICE's) reputation, no one wants to talk to them because they are afraid they are going to be deported", he said.

An estimated 30,000 protesters marched from Manhattan to Brooklyn with pins and signs that read, "Abolish ICE", joining more than 700 other rallies across the United States organized by the Families Belong Together-Freedom for Immigrants March.

The Department of Homeland Security says Ronald D. Vitiello will serve as deputy director of the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and also take on the role of ICE's acting director. Hartford City Councilwoman Wildaliz Bermudez, of the Working Families Party, said the visceral nature of reporting from the border during the height of the family separation crisis pushed the movement toward a tipping point.

Maria Svart, the group's national director, said the organization is ready to "apply pressure wherever possible to lift up the narrative that ICE is horrific, has no place in our communities and needs to be abolished".

During my trip to the southern border, it was clear that ICE, and its actions of hunting down and tearing apart families, has wreaked havoc on far too many people.

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio says he also agrees with protesters and fellow Democratic politicians who are calling for the abolition of the federal government's chief immigration enforcement agency. "They are great!" he tweeted.

Why do Dems want to abolish ICE?
