The wait is finally over and a victor has been declared in the LeBron James free agency sweepstakes.
But this one? This one is ... odd.
The 33-year-old James, one of the greatest players in the National Basketball Association, is coming off a season in which he reached his eighth straight championship series.
After snatching LeBron James, the biggest free agent in the 2018 market, the Los Angeles Lakers are shifting to filling out the roster.
While LeBron's past free-agency announcements have been spectacles.
It will be interesting to see the type of reception James gets when he returns to Cleveland next season. It's the last long-term max contract that James can sign thanks to the NBA CBA's Over-38 rule (formerly the Over-37 rule).
Last season, James averaged 27.5 points per game and a career-best 9.1 assists on a league-high 36.9 minutes a night.
The Cavs can offer James significantly more money - $207 million over five years, compared to $153 million over four years - than the Lakers and 76ers.
LeBron James is going to be a Laker.
The 33-year-old had previously said he wanted to finish his career in OH, and although he's leaving again, Cavs fans are more forgiving after he ended the city's 52-year sport title drought in 2016. They haven't had a winning season since the 2012-13 season, but it looks like that's all about to change. James led Cleveland to the NBA Finals, but lost to the Golden State Warriors in four games.
But the Warriors obtained Kevin Durant after that loss and Golden State has gone 8-1 against the Cavs in the two NBA Finals since.
The Los Angeles Lakers have recovered nicely from the start of free agency by managing to win the LeBron James Sweepstakes. James loves the Hollywood lights, and with two homes in the Los Angeles area as well as a film production company, he has already established some roots in the land of movie stars and slow-moving traffic. It also helps that the Lakers are one of the game's premier franchises.
