Uruguay finished atop Group A with a 3-0 win over Russian Federation in Samara, behind goals from Luis Suarez, Edinson Cavani and an own goal from Russia's Denis Cheryshev.

Russian Federation were reduced to 10 men after 36 minutes when right-back Igor Smolnikov was sent off for two yellow cards in a match that will be a reality check for a team that easily won its first two matches.

Denis Cheryshev then had the misfortune to double Uruguay's lead in the 23rd minute, a shot from Diego Laxalt that was going wide clipping his heels. Sebastian Coates comes in for the injured Jose Gimenez in defence as Uruguay coach Oscar Tabarez makes four changes for the clash.

However, without detracting from Uruguay's performance, Cherchesov had some harsh words for his own side's undisciplined display - particularly Igor Smolnikov's dismissal for a second bookable offence in the first half.

While Uruguay are brimming with confidence after keeping a clean sheet in a three-match World Cup group stage for only the second time, Russian Federation must somehow bounce back fast if they are not to exit the tournament much quicker than a nation dreams of.

Diego Laxalt later put Uruguay up by 2. Cavani poked it home for Uruguay's third goal.

Luis Suarez. Uruguay haven't looked terribly impressive at this World Cup but have managed to remain flawless in the group stages thanks to a miserly defence and the efforts of their talisman. "They (Russia) had hard times, they lacked experience, but the managed to overcome their problems, which were clearly obvious in their (preceding to the World Cup) friendly fixtures".

"It's important that goal scorers score goals", Tabarez said.

"In our training sessions we played against these set pieces, and today our opponents scored from set pieces".

"It's clear that they have top notch players, while we have very good players, too", Cherchesov said. "I hope that it continues like this for us as a team".

As winners of Group A, Uruguay go on to face the Group B runners-up in the round-of-16, which at this time of writing could be any of three teams: Spain, Portugal and Iran. Although the match was not crucial, we wanted to take the first place [in the group].
