The Spurs have wanted to find a way to fix the franchise's relationship with Leonard, but an overwhelming Lakers offer could convince San Antonio to part with its franchise star, league sources said.
With Paul George seriously considering staying with the Oklahoma City Thunder, the Lakers hope to land Leonard soon because James is hesitant to join L.A. without another star on the roster, according to ESPN. Thus perhaps it should not have been a surprise to see a report Wednesday indicating that James may bolt for Los Angeles and wait to see which other National Basketball Association star joins him there, quickly followed by another report claiming that the four-time MVP was "hesitant" to commit to the Lakers without assurance that the team had already landed some high-profile help.
While James and Leonard teaming up would make the Lakers instant championship contenders, the Spurs are reportedly asking for a significant return.
For the Spurs, however, it might be a massive win. The San Antonio Spurs' forward isn't a free agent, but he has demanded a trade and made it clear that he won't ever set foot in their locker room again. On top of that, he has one year left on his contract, and is absolutely impossible to trust that he will be coming back after one season.
Wojnarowski followed that up by noting the Los Angeles native wants to play in his hometown, preferably for the Lakers. According to Sam Amick of USA Today Sports, San Antonio does not want to trade Leonard within the Western Conference. That's not how Gregg Popovich rolls. At the end of the 2018-19 season, the two sides could say goodbye and move on. If he's serious about his employment with the team, swinging a deal for Leonard would make him a man of his word.
Making things even trickier is that James wants to make a quick decision about where he's headed next once free agency begins on July 1, per ESPN. That could mean that the Lakers may only be desperate for a little while longer.
Cleveland has also been linked to George, as well as All-Star point guard Chris Paul, although like the rest of the league, appears to be in a holding pattern until James makes his free agency decision.
