Brazil v Costa Rica

  • Neymar on the ball in training

The 26-year-old had limped out of training earlier in the week with an ankle injury, having received some rough treatment during Brazil's 1-1 draw with Switzerland.

A few minutes before the end, Neymar flopped backward to initially draw a penalty on Costa Rica, but the contact was so exaggerated the referee reversed the call after using video review.

Most of the tournament favourites haven't been particularly inspiring so far and in the final group game against Serbia on Wednesday, we'll hope to see a much more convincing performance from the South Americans.

However, Neymar too joined Coutinho in the injury-time as he notched his first goal of the World Cup to hand Brazil 2-0 win over Costa Rica.

And his players clearly respect him, with Coutinho and captain Thiago Silva speaking of how the team is learning to keep going right to the final whistle.

The PSG star collapsed to the ground and burst into tears while the rest of his team-mates celebrated.

It came at the flawless time with Brazil set to face a tough Serbia squad and the confidence they gained with this win could help them get three more points against the European squad.

Brazil are otherwise unchanged as Tite announced their squad on Thursday with the news that Neymar is expected to start.

"The demands on the players here at the World Cup are huge", Ronaldo, who won the World Cup in 1994 and 2002, said in a TV Globo broadcast. Costa Rica put forward a stubborn defence for the majority of the match and it seemed when Neymar had a penalty decision overturned by VAR that it was not going to be Brazil's day.

"Not everyone knows what I went through to get here", he posted on Twitter and Instagram.

Three matches are lined up for today.

On Friday evening, it was Coutinho who scored the opening goal for Brazil in the 91st minute.

Tite said Brazil should have been awarded the penalty that was chalked off by the VAR. Though the Costa Rica team defended well but were of no challenge to Brazil whatsoever.

"It is going to be a hard game as are all games in the World Cup", Brazil attacking midfielder Philippe Coutinho was quoted as saying. "We don't need referees in order to win the game; we just want it to be fair".

With Douglas Costa and Neymar controlling the flanks, players like Coutinho and Roberto Firmino were able to drive in the middle towards the goal and were constant threats.
