Apple Is Reportedly Working on High-End Airpods & Over-Ear Headphones

  • Bloomberg: Premium AirPods, next-gen HomePod and new over-ear Apple headphones coming in 2019

The new over-ear headphones will purportedly use Apple branding to distinguish themselves as a higher-end alternative to the Beats line.

Looking for a pair of Apple AirPods but don't want to spend a small fortune?

Since we can never hear enough about the next big thing Apple might have in store, here's something that could be music to your ears.

Bloomberg notes that none of these aforementioned deals are finalized, and production has not begun on any of these new audio products.

The Apple Inc. division responsible for accessories such as the AirPods wireless earbuds recorded $12.9 billion in revenue during the last fiscal year. Sources also say that the updated AirPods would come with a new case that is compatible with the Apple's new wireless charging pad.

Meanwhile, those over-ear headphones expected out "as early as next year" were reportedly planned for a 2018 debut before hitting some sort of a development snag. You won't be swimming in them though: The water resistance is mainly to protect against rain and perspiration, the people said. These will be put out under Apple, rather than Beats, branding.

The report from Sina doesn't mention when a cheaper HomePod would go on sale, but noted that Apple is discussing the plans with one of its suppliers, a Taiwanese chip manufacturer called MediaTek.

Enlarge / Sales of Apple's HomePod speaker have reportedly fallen below expectations. It intends to expand its partnership with Foxconn and reduce reliance on its smaller vendors like Inventec. The company also advertises Class 1 Bluetooth radios for newer Beats headphones such as the BeatsX, allowing connections from farther distances.

Apple wanted to release them at year's end, but it struggled to develop them, which forced the company to push back the launch to 2019, according to Bloomberg. The production however, has not been started.
