IGTV App By Instagram Released, Lets You Post Vertical And Longer Videos

21 June, 2018, 19:20 | Author: Miranda Cannon

Accounts with a large following will be able to post hour-long videos.

Instagram CEO Kevin Systrom made the announcement during an event in San Francisco today, exactly five years after the company first added video to its platform.

'Just like turning on the TV, IGTV starts playing as soon as you open the app, ' Instagram said in a statement.

-Facebook. Beyond Brand Collabs, the social network says it will offer more video makers the ability to put "Ad Breaks", into their live videos, with an ad revenue split.

While Facebook offers no detailed revenue breakdown, the research firm eMarketer estimates Instagram will generate $5.48 billion in net U.S. ad revenue this year, up 70.4 percent from last year and accounting for more than one-fourth of Facebook's net mobile ad revenue.

While I understand the reason IGTV videos are vertical-only (the primary focus is smartphone users), it is a bit short-sighted. With IGTV, videos can be a max of 60-minutes-long.

What makes this app different than Youtube is the native support for vertical videos as opposed to landscape video. Some creators are allowed to upload videos for up to an hour.

In the IGTV app, viewers will be able to swipe through a variety of longer-form videos, or simply check the Browse tab of personally recommended videos, popular videos or content from creators they're following with an option of continuing to watch previously started videos. Once you do, you can post videos by clicking on your own profile avatar within IGTV.

It means Instagram joins a prestigious club of apps and services that have one billion users, that includes Facebook, WhatsApp, Google Chrome, and YouTube.

"That is obviously a very reasonable place to end up", Mr. Systrom said during a news conference. Users can also like, comment and share videos with friends directly.

Instagram chief executive Kevin Systrom announced the milestone as he unveiled the new video application known as IGTV. IGTV has channels but the creators are the channels. Some of the most influential "creators" on the platform already are slated to create content for the feature, including Lele Pons, an actress and model who has 25.2 million followers.

Instagram boasts as many as 800 million active users, 500 million of which use the service every day. The company is expected to announce specifics at the VidCon convention, a gathering for online video makers, which begins Thursday in Anaheim, California.

It's been said that Instagram wants to attract "web celebrities" to IGTV, rather than traditional media companies or publishing firms. Enter Instagram, acquired by Facebook in 2012, which has always been the more visual platform and is traditionally more successful at courting young users.
