In an official announcement, the United States and South Korea have made a decision to suspend the Ulchi Freedom Guardian (UFG) exercise slated for August, as part of Trump's promise to North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.

But she conceded that Seoul was not informed in advance by Washington about the cancellation of military exercises - a surprise concession that US President Donald Trump offered to North Korean leader Kim Jong-un during their summit in Singapore last week.

A former senior official of the South Korean government said the decision is a "huge gain" for Pyongyang, as North Korea has been demanding the suspension of the joint military exercise as a condition of dialogue with the United States. It is a combination of Focus Lens exercise led by the United Nations Command since 1954 and S. Korea's Ulchi exercise that was launched after N. Korea's infiltration on the Blue House on January 21, 1968. For now, there appears to be no impact on the other main military exercise known as Foal Eagle that takes place every spring.

Democratic lawmakers, as well as some Republicans, criticized Trump's decision, warning that ending the joint drills could undermine the decades-long military alliance between Washington and Seoul ― and that the US had given up leverage by agreeing so quickly to halting the exercises without getting anything concrete in return.

The Pentagon has consistently labeled the annual large-scale exercises as defensive in nature and crucial to maintaining the readiness of both American and South Korean troops to fight back any military aggression from North Korea.

In announcing his decision, Trump said suspending the "provocative" war games would "save us a tremendous amount of money".

While South Korea has no nuclear arms and the United States withdrew tactical nuclear weapons from the peninsula in 1991, Kang did not address the assets which comprise the wider, regional USA nuclear umbrella - such as strategic bombers and nuclear submarines. The drills were held in April this year after a temporary delay to encourage North Korean participation in the South Korean Winter Olympics.

Ulchi Freedom Guardian is a two-week exercise that consists predominantly of computer-simulated defense drills. "This will certainly lead to the enhanced economic development, and not only of the two Koreas", the South Korean leader said in his exclusive interview to TASS First Deputy Director-General Mikhail Gusman for TASS, government daily Rossiyskaya Gazeta and Rossiya-24 TV ahead of his state visit to Russian Federation beginning on Thursday.

The first unified Olympic team was a joint women's ice hockey squad for the Pyeongchang Games in February, and there was criticism in Seoul that some South Koreans were being pushed out. North Korea's army said such a plan would be the "height of hostile acts" and its weapons were ready to fire.

Since his announcement after the Singapore summit, Trump has implied that U.S.
