  • BJP quits government in Jammu and Kashmir, ends alliance with PDP

According to media reports, IOK Governor NN Vohra had on Tuesday evening written to the president after concluding consultations with all major political parties in the occupied territory following the collapse of the Mehbooba Mufti-led Peoples Democratic Party government after the withdrawal of Bharatiya Janata Party's support.

Later in the day, Vohra had meeting with National Conference vice president Omar Abdullah who said that opined that Governor's rule and elections was the only option left.

"Keeping in mind that Jammu and Kashmir is an integral part of India and in order to control the prevailing situation in the state, we have decided that the reins of power in the state be handed over to the governor", Madhav added.

BJP general secretary Ram Madhav yesterday cited the "larger national interest.the deteriorating security situation" for the party's pullout.

The governor, N N Vohra, will take all key decisions to run the state on behalf of President Ram Nath Kovind. "We are happy that this alliance has ended", said Faizan Mir, a resident of Srinagar.

The governor asked Vyas where the chief minister was and asked him to immediately arrange a call with her, they said.

Apart from the divergent views between the two parties within the state government, a section of the BJP leadership felt that Mufti as chief minister was not doing justice to the regions of Jammu and Ladakh, as development work was mostly concentrated in Kashmir valley.

Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Wednesday said the government will not tolerate militancy in Jammu and Kashmir anymore and that operation will be launched to flush out militants, IANS reported. She (Mehbooba Mufti) also tried, but it can be a matter of assessment of how successful she has been.

The elections in 2015 gave the PDP 28 legislators while the BJP won 25.

More than 130 people have died in escalating violence in Kashmir this year.

"One thing is certain that she (Mehbooba) had completely no knowledge about it (the BJP's pull out)".

Local watchers see the BJP's decision as an attempt to charm its constituency.

When the alliance was forged between then PDP leader Mufti Mohammad Sayeed and the BJP, numerous party's supporters saw it as a betrayal of its people and backers.

With the process of a new government formation in the state following the death of Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed taking time, the state was placed under Governor's Rule.

The BJP blamed the PDP for failing to improve the security conditions in the Kashmir Valley.

The killing of prominent Kashmiri journalist, Shujat Bukhari, last week has sent shock waves in the disputed Himalayan region. Also, in another shocking incident, an Army officer Aurangzeb was kidnapped and killed by the terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir's Pulwama district. "We have to take a decision and may be the meeting has been called for that goal", said a senior BJP leader, who wished not to be named.
