  • Meghan Markle news Meghan and Harry

Prince Philip did not attend the racecourse in Ascot, Berkshire for the first day of the prestigious meeting.

Dettori, 47, kissed Meghan's hand as she presented him with his trophy for riding the favourite, Without Parole, to victory in the St James's Palace Stakes.

The pair rode in the traditional carriage procession alongside Prince Edward and the Countess of Wessex, as they prepared to kick off the five-day event in Berkshire.

The Princess Royal and Duke of York joined their mother in the lead carriage and were followed by another carrying the Prince of Wales, Duchess of Cornwall and Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie.

Today, her brother Will Waight told of the family's "immense pride" in Clare as they revealed they been sworn to secrecy about the stunning gown which made Prince Harry weep. "Meghan is keen to begin shaping the picture of her royal duties", one insider insists to E!

Meghan Markle may have been a Hollywood actress before becoming the Duchess of Sussex, but the attention she has since garnered on the world stage is incomparable.

But it also marked the last moment she could indulge in the full joy and self-expression of fashion, the dress designer has said.

"The use of neutral colour on Meghan's part is also a show of respect to the Queen so she never looks like she is trying to outshine her", Armitage said. She wore a white Givenchy buttoned dress with applique at the waist, discreet three-quarter sleeves and an asymmetrical hemline that hit mid-length.

The annual five-day horse-racing event requires quite the strict dress code, including asking all ladies to cover their shoulders and wear hats and name tags.

Kensington Palace recently announced that Harry and Meghan's first official foreign trip as a couple would be to Dublin in July.

However, it seems Meghan was ready to inject some playfulness back into her attire as this weekend, particularly at the wedding of Prince Harry's cousin and Princess Diana's niece, Celia McCorquodale.

It will be their first royal engagement overseas.
