The attack took place in al-Harra, southeast of the town of Albu Kamal, state news agency SANA said, citing a military source.

Iraq's Popular Mobilisation Forces, a grouping of mostly Iran-backed Shi'ite paramilitaries, said a US air strike on the Iraqi border with Syria killed 22 of its members and wounded 12 others.

The U.S. denied a report from Syrian state media saying the U.S. bombed Syrian military positions in the eastern portion of the country.

Syrian state media said on Monday that USA -led coalition aircraft had bombed "one of our military positions" in eastern Syria, leading to deaths and injuries, but the US military denied carrying out strikes in the area.

"The strike on Al-Hari produced the highest death toll for regime forces since the February incident", Observatory head Abdel Rahman told AFP.

"U.S. and coalition forces did not strike in the area of Albu Kamal against non-ISIS targets, as the Syrian regime claims", Pahon told Task & Purpose on Monday.

"No member of the U.S. -led coalition carried out strikes near Albu Kamal", Major Josh Jacques, a U.S. Central Command spokesman, told Reuters.

USA forces are also based in Tanf, southwest of Albu Kamal in the Syrian desert near the borders of Iraq and Jordan.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a Britain-based monitor of the conflict, said it was one of the deadliest air attacks on government loyalists in recent months. "We are concerned about the perception that we conducted this strike, particularly because we want to avoid any possible retaliation against our forces in Iraq or Syria".

ISIS fighters are close to losing their small pockets in east Syria after being besieged in the two provinces of Hasaka and Deir Ezzor, particularly in areas located east of the Euphrates River.

The only remaining major pockets of militants are found in the US-protected zones of 'interest.' In addition to the coalition's air support, over 2,000 U.S. soldiers are embedded with the SDF in the northeast, as well around Al-Tanf base, established not far from the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights.

According to CNN, Sunday's strike is unlike those normally carried out by Israel, as those attributed to Israel tend to occur in Syria's western region, around Damascus and Homs, and mostly targeting Iran's infrastructure and military presence in Syria.

Meanwhile, both US-backed Kurdish-led fighters and Russia-supported regime forces are separately fighting the Islamic State jihadist group in Syria's eastern province of Deir Ezzor.
