Sri Lanka defends cricket team over ball tampering allegation

  • Devon Smith scored his first Test fifty after three years out of the West Indies Test side

Sri Lankan captain Dinesh Chandimal has denied ball-tampering by using candies and will face a hearing at the conclusion of the ongoing second Test against the West Indies, the International Cricket Council (ICC) said Sunday.

Dinesh Chandimal was charged for breaching Level 2.2.9 of the ICC Code of Conduct.

It was on Saturday that Chandimal refused to take the field along with his teammates after the on-field umpires Ian Gould and Aleem Dar charged them to alter the conditions of the ball.

Sri Lanka had resumed play on day three on Saturday under protest after delaying the start and strongly denied it tampered with the ball in Saint Lucia.

The tourists eventually made a decision to play following lengthy discussions between match referee Javagal Srinath and Sri Lanka's coaching staff.

Sri Lanka captain Dinesh Chandimal was at the forefront of a protest against his side altering the condition of the ball.

"The ICC can confirm the match officials in the second Test between West Indies and Sri Lanka changed the ball and awarded 5 penalty runs to West Indies", the ICC said in a statement.

"The team management has informed us that Sri Lankan players have not engaged in any wrong doing during the ongoing (2nd) Test match played between Sri Lanka and West Indies", the SLC said in a statement.

SLC had however advised the team to take the field to ensure the continuity of the match and the cricket board commended the decision taken by the team to continue with the game "under protest" to ensure the upholding of the spirit of the game.

It is understood that the umpires were concerned about the condition of the ball at the end of the first day's play of the second Test.

Bancroft was subsequently whacked with a nine-month ban from worldwide and first-class cricket by Cricket Australia. Pakistan eventually forfeited that game.

Yet all was going the way of the West Indies at the start of the day with Gabriel lifting his innings haul to three and match haul to eight with the wickets of nightwatchman Kasun Rajitha and Dhananjaya de Silva in quick succession. But fast bowler Lahiru Kumara took the most wickets, four.

Shanaka's charge means this is the second time in two years that Sri Lanka have found themselves part of a controversy over the condition of the ball.

Opener Devon Smith fell for 61, having added only eight to his overnight half-century, while wicketkeeper/batsman Shane Dowrich followed up his century in the first Test with 55.
