Most Voters Call NK Summit a Success

  • Kremlin Putin was right to advocate for dialogue with North Korea

"This summit marked a new beginning for relations between the United States and North Korea and it opened the path for a future for all Koreans, north and south".

Hailing the success of this week's summit in Singapore, Trump told reporters in Washington that he is now in direct contact with Kim and that their "good relationship" had ended the risk of conflict.

"We signed a very good document", he said. It was an unprecedented encounter that saw the leader of the world's most powerful democracy shake hands with the third-generation scion of a dynastic dictatorship.

Trump was more muted when it came to Kim's record of human rights atrocities.

I think it's something that could happen. Yes. The North Korean leader starves many of his citizens, sentences opponents to labor camps and executes people he perceives as threats to his power, including assassinating family members.

Trump added in the interview that what was not surprising was that Kim "loves his people".

Trump also said meeting with Kim was important.

"We've legitimized a brutal dictator who's starved his own people", Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said on the Senate floor Tuesday.

When we can be sure there will be no more nuclear, he responded. "I can now call him", he said. Nobody thought we were going to get that.

If North Korea has even a marginal ability to destroy one U.S. city with a nuclear weapon, the United States is effectively deterred from using nuclear weapons against it (except if the USA could count on destroying every one of Kim's nuclear-tipped missiles in a surprise first strike - but that's why North Korea will move them around or dig them in deep). They do this for economic reasons and national security.

But simply because someone told Trump - or told someone to tell Trump - what saluting any North Korean military member might mean doesn't mean that Trump listened or remembered (or cared).

Trump was met with criticism this week after footage surfaced of him saluting a North Korean general. It is highly unusual for a USA president to return the salute of a foreign military officer.

Concerns about North Korean missiles and nuclear weapons reached a peak last year, during Trump's first year in office, as the North conducted more tests and Trump and Kim aimed fiery rhetoric at each other. "When Trump realised there wasn't going to be anything substantial in return, it was impossible for him to back out because he had already gone too far".

Putin said he would be happy to welcome Kim to Russian Federation, suggesting they meet during an economic forum in the far eastern port city of Vladivostok this September. "He saluted me and I saluted him back".

While the three major South Korea-U.S. war games went on in recent years, key U.S. strategic military assets were mobilized to the Korean Peninsula, causing strong backlash from the DPRK side. "I don't think I have to prepare very much".
