Exiled Yemen president goes to UAE as port attack looms

  • Battle for Yemen's biggest port under way

A senior United Arab Emirates official said on Tuesday that the Iran-aligned Houthi movement must evacuate Yemen's main port of Hodeidah as troops backed by a Saudi-led coalition geared for an assault on the city.

Late Thursday, Yemen's Foreign Minister Khaled Alyemany told a group of United Nations reporters in NY that military operations by the Saudi-led coalition are not taking place near the port but in an area close to the airport.

More than 10,000 people have been killed in Yemen's civil war, which has displaced 2 million others and helped spawn a cholera epidemic.

Yemen's exiled government says their forces and allied Saudi-led troops launched their assault on Hodeida only after "exhausting all peaceful and political means".

There was no immediate word from state media in either Saudi Arabia or the United Arab Emirates, which lead a coalition backing Yemen's exiled government.

"I am extremely concerned about military escalation in #Hodeida & their humanitarian & political impact", he said in a tweet.

The assault, part of an operation dubbed Golden Victory, began with coalition air strikes and shelling by naval ships, according to Saudi-owned satellite news channels and state media.

Global aid agencies and the United Nations have warned the assault could shut down the vital aid route for some 70 percent of Yemen's food, as well as the bulk of humanitarian aid and fuel supplies.

The Saudi-led coalition accuses the Huthis of using the port to secure Iranian arms, notably the ballistic missiles the militants have increasingly fired into Saudi territory.

"The worldwide community must pressure the Houthis to evacuate Hodeidah & leave the port intact", UAE Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Anwar Gargash said on Twitter.

The offensive is controversial as Hodeida serves as the key entry point for supplies into a country teetering on the brink of starvation.

"As has been the case since the beginning of the war, the cost of the battle for Hodeida will largely accrue to the already impoverished civilian population", the International Crisis Group warned in a report Monday.

Some 2,000 troops who crossed the Red Sea from an Emirati naval base in the African nation of Eritrea were awaiting orders to move in from the west after Yemeni government forces seize Hodeida's port, Yemeni security officials said.

The war pits the Houthis against the Western-backed Sunni Muslim states, which intervened in 2015 to restore the exiled government and thwart what Riyadh and Abu Dhabi see as expansionist aims Iran.

The United Nations is calling for an end to the fighting. The UN Security Council is scheduled to meet to discuss the offensive.

"We hear sounds of explosions". It says the lives of 250,000 residents are threatened.

"We do not provide any additional support to the Saudi coalition's military operations", he said.
