"People are going to be very impressed and people are going to be very happy and we are going to take care of a very unsafe problem for the world", Trump said. "If diplomacy does not move in the right direction, those measures will increase", he said.

Trump, after the first-ever meeting between US and North Korean leaders, had been scheduled to fly back to Washington on Wednesday morning after spending Tuesday with Kim in Singapore.

Pompeo is briefing reporters in Singapore ahead of President Donald Trump's summit Tuesday with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

Separately, UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres on Monday said the UN would assist both parties in the talks, including verifying North Korean denuclearisation, if asked.

Trump and Kim planned to meet one on one, joined only by translators, for up to two hours before admitting their respective advisers, a US official said.

Lobster bisque, beef tenderloin and ice cream were on the lunch menu, and there was also an early birthday cake for Mr Trump, who turns 72 on Thursday.

"I think the minimum would be a relationship".

A US official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Monday's meeting appeared aimed at making 11th-hour progress ahead of the summit since Sung Kim's earlier talks did little to narrow a gap between the two sides on the definition of denuclearisation or win agreement on tangible commitments from Pyongyang toward dismantling its nuclear arsenal.

Trump, too, has recently sought to minimize expectations, saying additional meetings may be necessary.

Trump on Monday forecast a "nice" outcome, while Kim spent the day out of view.

After a handshake, they were soon smiling and holding each other by the arm, before Trump guided Kim to the library where they held a meeting with only their interpreters.

Pompeo met Kim during two visits to North Korea in the lead-up to Tuesday's summit. Pyongyang is demanding as yet unspecified security guarantees and the end of what it calls a "hostile policy" towards it, and has not made clear what concessions it is offering over the nuclear arsenal it calls its "treasured sword" to defend against a United States invasion.

Discussions would focus on "the issue of building a permanent and durable peace-keeping mechanism on the Korean peninsula, the issue of realising the denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula and other issues of mutual concern", KCNA said.

Upon his arrival, President Trump first met with the Prime Minister of Singapore, who is hosting the summit.

Trump is all set to depart for Singapore where he is scheduled to meet with Kim on Tuesday.

A working lunch is on the agenda after this meeting.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Monday that the new, "unique" security assurances would show the isolated regime that giving up its weapons "is not something that ends badly for them".

Trump says he thinks "things can work out very nicely" with North Korea on the eve of his historic summit with Kim Jong-un.

Moon spokesman Kim Eui-kyeom also said Monday that Moon has no plans yet to speak with Trump after the meeting.

But in the lead up to the historic summit, several analysts have pointed out that the Trump administration doesn't have a clear plan for how it will approach the discussions, and that both sides of the negotiating table have very different ideas about what "denuclearization" means.

Trump arrived in Singapore from the 44th G7 Summit, which took place June 8th to 9th in La Malbaie, Quebec.

China has played a role in North Korea's isolation after agreeing to worldwide sanctions put in force by the United Nations, and has also been seen as keen to keep itself as the major diplomatic force influencing Pyongyang.
