  • Secretary of State: NYT Report is Mistaken, President Trump is Prepared for Summit

The first-ever meeting between a USA president and a North Korean leader was to kick off at 9am on Tuesday (2am BST) with a handshake, an image sure to be devoured from Washington to Pyongyang and beyond.

The president reminded critics that since he first agreed to meet Kim Jong-un, North Korea stopped testing nuclear weapons, paused missile launches, and returned American hostages to the United States.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said the president was fully prepared for the meeting.

The United States and South Korea are not now talking about withdrawing any of the roughly 26,000 US troops on the Korean peninsula, Mattis said at a Pentagon press briefing.

The consensus for a second summit was also reached during multiple working-level meetings between the two sides, Joongang Ilbo said.

Trump and Kim, who have traded a volley of insults and even threatened each other of nuclear war, are meeting at Capella Hotel, a five-star resort on Singapore's Sentosa Island.

"Certainly it creates conditions for further forward movement and decreases general tensions around the Korean peninsula", he added. The two clasped hands for a long while as they posed for photos in front of a row of USA and North Korean flags.

Detailed discussions between USA and North Korea officials "are ongoing and have moved more quickly than expected", the White House said in a statement. "Tomorrow, we will get our clearest indication to date whether Chairman Kim Jong-un shares this vision", Pompeo said.

"I think that I brought awareness to a lot of things around the world and I think North Korea has given a lot of people the opportunity to do this conference now and I hope it's a success". Trump briefly called off the summit a few weeks ago before agreeing again to the meeting.

Trump also said during a press conference Saturday at the Group of Seven (G-7) meeting that he'll gauge Kim's mindset "within the first minute" of meeting him in Singapore.

But critics said the Kim and Trump summit was more style than substance, producing a document short on specifics about the key issue of Pyongyang's atomic weapons.

On President Trump's tweet: He's right.

North Korea has said it is willing to commit to denuclearisation, but that term is open to interpretation.
