Tensions between the United States and the European Union saw the G7 summit end in chaos after Mr Trump refused to sign the joint statement of world leaders. Those tensions boiled over during the G7 summit in Canada on Saturday, with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and European leaders reaffirming plans to institute retaliatory measures and Trump lashing out in response by refusing to endorse the group of industrialized nations' communique.

"She was looking at me, you know what we were doing?" While Merkel, in the picture, can be seen standing behind a table with both hands pressed firmly into its surface atop some documents, Trump with his arms crossed stares back.

The US leader, who is in Singapore for a landmark summit with North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un, said America was paying more towards the cost of NATO than fellow members.

A German finance ministry spokesman said: "We have made significant progress with our French friends towards a reform proposal for the euro zone and we will continue our talks next week".

Trump later reacted to the photo, saying it was captured during a discussion that was "unrelated to anything".

As befits his role as annual chairman of the G-7, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's picture is taken from the side, impartially showing Mr Trump dealing with his counterparts as equals.

Merkel was not the only one to criticize Trump's move. She added that with Trump's "unpredictable" leadership and the US turn toward isolationism, the European Union needs to hone its response to a raft of issues in an environment in which global institutions need to be "newly proven".

In comments to reporters from her home country, Merkel offered what may be her strongest direct criticism of Trump so far as the relationship between the two leaders continues to fray. Trump said the tariffs are necessary for national security. "After a long day of work and very direct dialogue, we are actively seeking an ambitious agreement", an English translation of Macron's tweet reads.

Out of a hundred photos that were taken during the Group of Seven (G7) summit in Canada, this particular picture of stood out after it was surfaced on social media on Saturday.

Foreign Minister Heiko Maas, whose office for the first time in the history of the republic has reportedly ordered an overhaul of Germany's U.S. policy, went further.
