The Trump-Kim summit, which will be held at the Capella Hotel on Tuesday morning, will mark the first time a North Korean leader has met with a sitting U.S. president.

On the eve of the first encounter between a sitting US president and a leader of North Korea, American officials are maintaining any resulting agreement must lead to an end of North Korea's nuclear weapons and ballistic missile threats.

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo speaks during a press briefing, June 11, 2018 in Singapore one day before President Donald Trump will meet with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

Body language experts said that in the 13 seconds or so the USA president held on to the hand of Kim for the first time, he projected his usual dominance by reaching out first, and patting the North Korean leader's shoulder.

Both North Korea and the US have nonetheless sought to set expectations high. -North Korea meetings, including translators, photographers and logistical staff, asking how they can be sure they are not actually spies.

But they were soon smiling and holding each other by the arm, before Trump guided Kim to the library where they held a meeting with only their interpreters.

"I think that very quickly I'll know that something good is going to happen", Trump said in Canada where we met leaders of other G7 economies.

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, the former Central Intelligence Agency director, spent the morning preparing with his top advisers, aides said.

Mr Lee said in response: "Thank you for coming to Singapore".

Around twenty minutes earlier, Trump's top North Korea negotiator, ambassador to the Philippines Sung Kim, arrived with one adviser, smiling at a scrum of television cameras and reporters gathered outside the hotel.

"The deep-rooted hostile relationship and the North Korean nuclear issue can not be resolved in one single action in a meeting between leaders", the president said after the cabinet meeting on Monday. "And it's my honour and we will have a terrific relationship I have no doubt".

The summit will be the first between a North Korean leader and a sitting American president, and could define the fate of millions, along with the leaders' own political futures. Libya's Moammar Gadhafi gave up his nuclear weapons program, only to fall from power.

Trump has also raised the possibility of further summits and an agreement ending the Korean War by replacing the armistice signed in 1953 with a peace treaty.

"Dennis Rodman was either drunk or on drugs (delusional) when he said I wanted to go to North Korea with him".

Mr Lee is slated to meet separately with each leader at the Istana in the run-up to the summit.
