Robert De Niro introduces a performance by Bruce Springsteen at the 72nd annual Tony Awards at Radio City Music Hall.

"I'm gonna say one thing: F-k Trump", De Niro shouted, raising his arms into the air as the crowd cheered for almost half a minute. "It's no longer down with Trump, it's F-ck Trump", he said once more this time pumping two fists in the air.

Ari'el Stachel, the California-born son of an Israeli-Yemeni father and an Ashkenazi mother from NY, won the award for Best Featured Actor in a Musical for his performance as a romantic Egyptian trumpeter in "The Band's Visit".

The audience then erupted in cheers and stood clapping.

Garfield won best actor in a play for his acclaimed performance in the Angels In America revival, a monumental two-part drama about AIDS during the Reagan years.

That's when a wide applause of approval turned into a standing ovation for De Niro's declaration!

Besides the top prize, Harry Potter, a record-setting US$69 million production set 19 years after the last of JK Rowling's best-selling novels about the boy wizard, won another five Tonys including best director. And we have a word for that: "bullsh*t", he said last week while praising the winners of the first Jimmy and Rosemary Breslin American Writer Award in NY.

Co-hosts Josh Groban and Sara Bareilles kicked the show off with a self-parodying duet on piano for all the losers out there - including them.

"The Band's Visit", about Egyptian musicians stranded in a small Israeli town, also won acting awards for stars Tony Shaloub, Katrina Lenk and Ari'el Stachel, as well as best book, score, director, orchestration, sound design and lighting.

Many congrats to Stachel on his first Tony win!

"Your biggest obstacle", said Stachel of "The Band's Visit", addressing young artists all across the nation, "may turn out to be your objective".

Airing on Sunday, the awards show will recognize the best of Broadway's 2017-18 season. Mendez, who plays millworker Carrie Pipperidge in "Carousel, " said that at the beginning of her career "I was told to change my name from Mendez to Matthews or I wouldn't work".
