  • Ghana to dissolve football association over bribery allegations

The President of Ghana, Nana Akufo-Addo, has dissolved the country's football association in response to the revelation illuminating the corrupt practices of Kwesi Nyantakyi's led board.

The GFA President, ahead of his resignation, was banned from all football-related activities for 90 days by the world football governing body, FIFA.

In the two-hour documentary - "When Greed and Corruption Become the Norm", released on Wednesday - several Ghanaian referees and appointing officials are shown allegedly accepting cash gifts in exchange for fixing games in the Ghana Premier League, including one between Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko, and cup competitions at various levels of the game.

The football chief said "scammers" had "deceived me into thinking they were genuine persons interested in investing in our country".

Mr Nyantakyi has not replied to multiple requests for comment while the GFA has said it would cooperate with any investigation.

The documentary was screened on June 6 and 7 in Accra and the fallout resulted in the CAF Vice President and FIFA Council member tendering in his resignation to the GFA General Secretary, Isaac Addo.

The Ghanaian government has begun a process to dissolve the national soccer body, Information Minister Mustapha Abdul-Hamid said on Thursday.

He said the government would soon announce provisional measures to govern football activities until a new association could be formed.

They will also drop out of the U20 World Cup.

Federation Internationale de Football Association has not yet commented on whether any action will be taken over the government's plan to dissolve the GFA.

Football is by far the most popular sport in Ghana and while the national team, the Black Stars, failed to reach this year's World Cup finals, they were quarter-finalists in South Africa in 2010. In one clip, Range Marwa, a major worldwide referee from Kenya is seen taking $600 from a man reportedly posing as a Ghanaian official.
