Chancellor Angela Merkel: Trump's rejection of G7 communique 'sobering' and 'depressing'

U.S. President Donald Trump's decision to back out of a Group of Seven communique through a Twitter message has destroyed trust and Europe's answer must be to stick even closer together, Foreign Minister Heiko Maas said on Sunday.

President Trump concluded his visit to the Group of Seven summit on Saturdaywith warnings to US allies, saying if they don't eliminate barriers to trade, they could lose access to the USA economy.

He said Trump had done Trudeau the "courtesy" of traveling to the summit when "he had other things, bigger things on his plate", referring to Trump's June 12 summit with North Korean ruler Kim Jong-un.

Despite being at odds with other countries at the gathering in Canada, Mr Trump rated his relationship with their leaders as a "10" - naming Germany's Angela Merkel, French president Emmanuel Macron and Canada's Justin Trudeau, but not the UK's Prime Minister.

The G7 nations are Canada, France, the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, Japan and Italy.

Like Canada, the European Union is preparing counter-measures against US tariffs on steel and aluminium imports, in line with World Trade Organisation rules, Merkel said.

Trump cited progress on reaching an agreement on the North American Free Trade Agreement with Canada and Mexico, saying the final outcome would lead either to an improved trade deal or separate pacts with the two US neighbors.

But Trudeau says what the leaders did this weekend was "roll up our sleeves" and figure out language they could agree to on a broad range of issues. Merkel said that while she could imagine such a scenario in the future, Moscow would first have to make progress in putting forth a viable peace plan for the country, Reuters reported.

"There are good reasons on our side to continue to fight for it but we can't count on it anymore", she said.

In a statement, a spokesman for Trudeau did not address Trump's insults. The Canadian leader pulled a "sophomoric political stunt for domestic consumption", Kudlow said, that amounted to "a betrayal". Russian Federation was suspended from the group - then known as the G8 - in 2014 after the majority of member countries allied against its annexation of Crimea.

Trump, during the G7 summit, antagonized leaders of G7 nations. "I may have had a much different attitude".

The chancellor also announced during Sunday's interview that, just like Canada, the European Union was also preparing counter-measures to Trump's steel and aluminum tariffs.

"Trump came late, he's leaving early and he gave no ground whatsoever", Al Jazeera's John Hendren, reporting from Quebec, said.

"The United States has been taken advantage of for decades and decades", Trump said.

"He held a press conference and he said the U.S.is insulting".
