More than 60 people have come down with salmonella after eating pre-cut melon from Walmart, including six people from IL, and may have been distributed at other stores.

It says the five states where people were sickened are Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Missouri and Ohio.

Amid an ongoing investigation from IDPH, the agency recommends to not purchase pre-cut melons from Walmart stores in IL.

So far only pre-cut melons have been linked, but it's important to remember food safety measures if you buy whole melons.

The individuals who became ill said they ate pre-cut cantaloupe, watermelon or a fruit salad mix that contained melon. Recalled products were sold in clear, plastic clamshell containers at Costco, Jay C, Kroger, Payless, Owen's, Sprouts, Trader Joe's, Walgreens, Walmart, and Whole Foods/Amazon.

"Because it is possible that products shipped between April 17 and June 7, 2018, could still be on store shelves, this recall extends to both retailers and consumers", said the recall, which includes a list of all products affected.

Consumers who purchased pre-cut melon from Walmart stores in Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Missouri or OH should not eat it and are advised to throw it away, the CDC recommends. "If you have recently purchased pre-cut melon from Walmart, throw it out", Shah said.

Contact a healthcare provider if you think you got sick from consuming pre-cut melon.

Most people reporting illness said they bought pre-cut melon from Walmart or Kroger stores.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is investigating the source of the salmonella.

Other symptoms can be much worse for young children and people over 65, however, and the CDC estimates about 450 people die of salmonella each year. Several of those people have been hospitalized as a result. In such cases, the salmonella infection may spread to the bloodstream and to other body sites, leading to a life-threatening infection that requires prompt treatment with antibiotics.
