Russian Federation has been hit with sanctions by the United States and the West over its 2014 annexation of Crimea, its support for separatist rebels in Ukraine's east and its alleged interference in the U.S. 2016 presidential election. The first thing we did - we increased our contingent to provide the security of our armed forces there, our military objects that had to be attempted and encroached as we saw.

"We are in dialogue with our partners in the EU, and I hope they will be eventually ashamed that they allow such major violations of the rights of people who live in the territory of the EU, while talking about human rights violations outside the EU", Putin said according to Interfax during a questions and answers session when asked to take measures in connection with encroachments on the rights of Russians living in Latvia.

President Vladimir Putin says Russian Federation is now not planning to withdraw all of its troops from Syria. He suggested the stadiums could add cafes and shopping malls to boost their profitability once the competition is over.

Regional officials have estimated annual maintenance costs of the various World Cup stadiums at 200 million to 400 million rubles ($3.2 million to $6.4 million) each. USA and Russian officials haven't discussed specifics yet.

Putin's statement comes after Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov met with Kim last week to discuss his upcoming summit with Trump. "They see that Russian Federation has become a competitor to them ... we propose that this is a very mistaken policy".

The poisoning of former Russian double agent Sergei Skripal and his daughter in Britain further strained the EU-Russia ties. The Skripals were in critical condition for weeks before recovering.

Putin said on his annual call-in show on Thursday that one of the goals of his presidency is to halve the number of Russians living below the poverty line, which now stands at over 20 million people.

Responding to speculation that authorities might be looking to scrap the flat income tax, Putin said his government has decided that this is "not expedient" at this point.

Austrian exports to Russia declined sharply after European Union sanctions in 2014 were met by Russian sanctions.

On Thursday, he said Russia's gross domestic product is now 1.5 percent higher than a year ago.

Austria was the first western European country to sign a gas delivery agreement with the Soviet Union, on June 1, 1968, and Putin's visit this week coincides with that anniversary.
