Amazon inks deal to show 20 soccer matches a year in UK

The online streaming service has won the rights to show one round of midweek games and one round from a bank holiday. Now it has been announced that it was successful in at least part of its bid. The service costs £7.99 a month, or an annual subscription of £79 a year.

It does similar with some live sporting events in the US.

The U.S. company secured one of two previously unsold three-year packages for United Kingdom rights, the Premier League said on Thursday, with BT picking up the other to increase its access to live action. In all, it will showcase 20 matches, scheduled at points that are expected to gain relatively low viewing figures.

That means from August next year, BT will be showing 52 live games per season with Sky Sports broadcasting 128 matches.

Fifteen of BT's extra games will come from two midweek fixture programmes and five from a new split weekend in January which will enable the Premier League to take a midwinter break for the first time - a move that will delight the Football Association and whoever is managing the England team.

In a statement, Amazon said: "This will be the first time a full round of Premier League fixtures will be broadcast live in the UK".

After the past two domestic deals both produced 70 per cent jumps in the value of rights, the league is now experiencing a downturn and looking to generate more revenue overseas where all 380 games are available live each season.

"Sky and BT are established Premier League partners and provide first-rate coverage of the competition through their live-match broadcasts and comprehensive programming".

Now, some four months on and following extended negotiations, a deal has been struck with the Amazon and BT Sport.

"This new agreement will continue that trend with a subtle change that further incentivises on-pitch achievement and maintains the Premier League's position as the most equitable in Europe in terms of sharing central revenues".

The Premier League was unable to achieve the price it was seeking for the streaming packages, with bidders unable to see how to make a real return on just having two rounds of matches a season.

No doubt the organisation are excited about tapping into a network of 100 million Prime members worldwide - over ten times the number of subscribers to Sky, who have been experiencing falling viewership in their sports packages in recent years.
