Women With Early Stage Breast Cancer Can Skip Chemo, Study Says

  • Participant Adine Usher met last month with study leader Dr. Joseph Sparano at the Montefiore and Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York

Data found that 15 years after such treatment, 73.2 percent of patients given this more extensive radiation were alive, compared to 70.8 percent of those who underwent standard of care. You have got a great prognosis and chemotherapy won't help.

This study only focused on women diagnosed with breast cancer. men were not included in the study.

The new results demonstrate that chemotherapy is not beneficial for most women in the intermediate risk group, the researchers said in a statement.

"It feels miraculous, and I am beyond amazed that I have now been free of cancer for two years", Ms Perkins said.

The US team led by Dr Steven Rosenberg, from the National Cancer Institute in Bethesda, Maryland, identified immune system T-cells within the cancerous breast tissue that were able to recognise and target four mutant tumour proteins. The test looks at 21 different genes known to play a role in the development of breast cancer. The test scores the tumor from 0 to 100, with a high score-26 or above-indicating that chemotherapy will improve therapeutic efficacy, and a low score-10 or under-suggesting a very low likelihood of distant recurrence at 10 years, which is unlikely to be affected by adjuvant chemotherapy.

You'd think if a patient diagnosed with breast cancer had the option of undergoing chemotherapy or safely going without it, the answer would be obvious.

But it has many torturing side-effects including vomiting, hair loss, fatigue, anemia, nerve pain and, in rare cases, heart failure and leukaemia.

"It allows us to individualize treatment based on extraordinary science that now has tremendous prospective validation", he said.

He said: This is a remarkable and extremely promising result, but we need to see this effect repeated in other patients before giving hope of a new immunotherapy for incurable metastatic breast cancer.

The Oncotype DX genetic test has been available on the NHS since 2013, but the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (Nice) is now updating its guidance on whether it should be recommended for use. "Most women in this situation don't need treatment beyond surgery and hormone therapy", he said, and "the rest of them are receiving chemotherapy unnecessarily".

Nine-year survival rates were 93.9% without chemotherapy and 93.8% with chemotherapy, the study found.

Because of her work as a nurse, she was familiar with chemotherapy's sometimes harsh effects.

In clinical practice, he said, "application of this test would be expected to spare chemotherapy in about 70% of women and select chemotherapy in about 30%". She had tennis ball-sized tumours in her liver and secondary cancers throughout her body, as reported by the BBC.

An almost-unprecedented cure for a terminal breast cancer patient using a form of cellular immunotherapy shows that while immuno-oncology is still in its infancy, the potential is enormous. Patients using both types of treatment had an overall survival rate of 93.8 percent. Clearly communicating research findings are important for helping patients make informed decisions about treatment and modifying risk. While lymph nodes in the axilla (armpit) are the most commonly affected, and are usually treated with surgery or radiation, the cancer may spread into lymph nodes behind the breast bone - called internal mammary (IM) lymph nodes - and then to those above the collar bone - called medial supraclavicular (MS) lymph nodes.
