Kilauea Lava Flow Rolls Into Sea at Kapoho Bay

"Volcanic gas emissions remain very high from the fissure eruptions", the USGS said.

The flow of lava especially from fissure eight has cut off Puna Kapoho and several residents had to be airlifted to safety.

Seaside residents and boaters also have been warned to avoid noxious clouds of laze - a term combining the words "lava" and "haze" - formed when lava reacts with seawater to form a mix of acid fumes, steam and glass-like specks.

Be aware of the laze hazard and stay away from any ocean plume.

The strong quake fortunately did not trigger a tsunami even as lava continues to bubble from the volcano.

The lava itself, extruded from about two dozen fissures that opened on the slope of Kilauea's "eastern rift zone" earlier this month, has also knocked out telephone and power lines and forced the shutdown of a geothermal energy plant.

On Monday, civil defense reported a total of 117 homes and other structures destroyed across the island's larger lava-stricken region, as the eruption from Kilauea, one of the world's most active volcanoes, continued through its 33rd day. There is no curfew.

In addition, at over four weeks, this eruption has lasted longer than the 1955 and 1924 eruptions, the USGS said.

So too have airborne volcanic glass fibers, called "Pele's hair", wispy strands carried aloft by the wind from lava fountains and named for the volcano goddess of Hawaiian myth. It advised residents in communities downwind, including Pahala, Ocean View and Kona, to limit their exposure to gas and ash. The route connects Highway 130 through Sanford's Service Center Inc. property north of Kamā'ili Road / 'Opihikāō Drive and Ala'ili Road. Delays are to be expected in that area.

The Hawai'i Department of Transportation and the County of Hawai'i Department of Public Works apologizes for any inconvenience this may cause and thanks the community for their patience and understanding. Police on Monday said a man sped through a checkpoint near an intersection where lava was approaching.

The Hawaii Volcano Observatory reported that Fissure 8 is continuing to feed "a large channelized flow" along Highway 132. Upon being contacted by officers and informed that the road was closed and he could not enter the area, he disregarded the officer's commands and sped through the checkpoint at a high rate of speed.

Kauahikaua estimated several hundred cubic yards of lava were being produced per second, although he said such estimates are not exact. He faces charges that include refusing to evacuate and reckless driving.
