President Donald Trump said on Friday an unprecedented nuclear arms summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un that the United States pulled out of will now go ahead as scheduled on June 12 in Singapore, adding another twist to a high-stakes diplomatic dance.

"We're going to be June 12 - we'll be in Singapore".

The arrangements for the five-star accommodations are among many that have to be hashed out before Kim and President Trump sit down for the historic talks in Singapore, the Washington Post reported.

Nevertheless, the United States president had warm words for Pyongyang, saying the long discussions had touched on North Korea's denuclearization and economic development. Under Trump, the USA has led a "maximum pressure" campaign of military drills and strict sanctions against North Korea, which has so far refused to abandon the nuclear weapons it believes are necessary to protect it from a US invasion. "Why would I do that when we're talking so nicely", he said.

Last week, Trump had abruptly canceled the historic Singapore meeting arranged by USA and North Korean officials after North Korea sent a bellicose letter critical of Vice President Mike Pence.

But the U.S. would need to circumvent its own sanctions against the rogue nation. He added there may even need to be a second or third summit meeting to reach a deal on North Korean denuclearization but still hedged, saying "maybe we'll have none". But Trump also promised he would ensure security for both Kim and the North Korean regime if he does close down his nuclear weapons program.

"Our secretary of state is having very good meetings", Mr. Trump told reporters at Joint Base Andrews before departing on a trip to Texas. North Korea followed up, however, by sending trusted Kim Jong Un aide Kim Yong Chol, who delivered the letter from Kim Jong Un to Trump. North Korea's conciliatory response to that letter appears to have put the summit back on track. He is the most senior North Korean to visit in 18 years, a symbolic sign of easing tensions after fears of war escalated amid North Korean nuclear and missile tests last year.

The meeting followed two landmark summits between the leaders of North and South Korea in the last five weeks. Despite Kim's apparent eagerness for a summit with Trump, there are many doubts that he would fully relinquish his nuclear arsenal, which he may see as his guarantee of survival.

Trump had called off the summit late last month, citing North Korea's "tremendous anger and open hostility". "I said, 'Would you want me to open it?' He said, 'You can read it later'".

Despite the upbeat messaging in the United States, Kim Jong Un, in a meeting with Russia's foreign minister on Thursday, complained about the US trying to spread its influence in the region, a comment that may complicate the summit plans.

Kim Yong Chol, vice chairman of the North Korean ruling party's central committee, was allowed into the United States despite being on a US sanctions list.

The North Korean envoy, a close confidant of Kim Jong-un, arrived in Washington after two days of talks with US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo in NY.
