  • Kim Yong Chol center a vice chairman of North Korea’s ruling Workers’ Party Central Committee leaves to return to North Korea at a hotel in Seoul South Korea

Abe is expected to reiterate his request that Trump bring up the issue of North Korea's abductions of Japanese citizens during his meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

A top North Korean official arrived in the US on Wednesday for the highest-level talks between the two countries on American soil in 18 years, as the Trump administration works to prepare for a summit in Singapore with the isolated regime less than two weeks from now.

As the fate of the June 12 summit hangs in balance, South Korea's presidential Blue House is considering whether President Moon Jae-in will travel to Singapore around June 12 in an effort to hold a trilateral meeting, a Blue House spokesman said Wednesday.

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is greeted by senior North Korean official Kim Yong-chol, director of the United Front Department, which is responsible for North-South Korea affairs, centre left, and Foreign Minister Ri Su-yong, centre right, on his arrival in Pyongyang earlier this month. It's the highest-level official North Korean visit to the United States in 18 years.

The visit comes ahead of a summit planned for June 12, which Trump canceled but now says may take place after all.

Washington wants North Korea to quickly give up all its nuclear weapons in a verifiable way in return for sanctions and economic relief.

The two countries do not have a diplomatic relationship and North Korea only has a mission in NY for its delegation to the UN.

Kim Yong-chol, who previously headed the country's spy agency, has played a prominent role in negotiations with South Korea and the United States in recent months.

"If it happens, we'll certainly be ready", White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said of plans for the summit. Meetings are now taking place concerning Summit, and more.

After the North's combative statements, there was debate inside the Trump administration about whether it marked a real turn to belligerence or a feint to see how far Kim Jong-un could push the U.S.in the lead-up to the talks.

Kim Yong Chol is a former military intelligence chief and one of the North Korean leader's most trusted aides.

Pictures showed them shaking hands and embracing on the North Korean side of the Demilitarized Zone separating the two nations.

Shortly afterwards however the USA president indicated that he might yet meet the North Korean leader as scheduled or postpone the summit.

As the fate of the US-North Korean peace summit remains unclear, Pyongyang's interest in foreign investments may lead to a Western fast food franchise gaining a foothold in the country.

"We have put a great team together for our talks with North Korea".

North Korea denied any involvement in the attack on the ship and on Sony Pictures.
