"After the resistance succeeded in confronting the (Israeli) aggression. there was a lot of mediation in the past hours", Hamas' deputy chief in Gaza, Khalil al-Hayya, said, in a nod to Egypt's efforts.

Israeli authorities reported that rockets had caused some damage to communities near the Gaza border, including a direct hit on a residential home and another in the southern Israeli town of Netivot. These attacks came after months of using Palestinian human shields as cover for other attacks on Israel.

The Israeli military said more than 25 projectiles were fired on Tuesday. The announcement comes amid reports of intense strikes in Israel and Gaza during what has been described as the worst hostilities since 2014.

Both Hamas and the Islamic Jihad are claiming responsibility for the rocket barrage.

It accused Gaza's dominant Hamas movement and the pro-Iran Islamic Jihad group of launching the salvoes. No children were present at the time.

He told AFP that Gaza's rulers Hamas were also committed to it, though there was no immediate confirmation from Hamas or Israel.

The United Nations Security Council is expected to meet on Wednesday to discuss the violence, following an American request for an urgent meeting.

Israeli fire has killed more than 110 Palestinians, majority during the Hamas-led protests, which climaxed on May 14.

Across the board, however, MKs and ministers alike were uniform in condemning the barrage of rockets and mortars that were launched towards Israel and reiterated that the country is not keen on going to war.

Israel responded with heavy airstrikes.

"It all depends on Hamas", Kaztz said.

The flare-up is the biggest since Israel and Hamas, the militant Islamist faction that rules Gaza, fought a 50-day war in 2014.

Israel responded to the cross-border attacks by targeting 65 terror sites, including rocket and munitions factories, military compounds and a terror tunnel.

"They have the ability, the control and the power to escalate or to deescalate the situation, to rein in the Palestinian's and their own extremist factions in Hamas or to escalate the situation", said military spokesman Jonathan Conricus.

"The Israeli occupation bears full responsibility for any upcoming escalation".

Israeli forces killed at least 116 Palestinians and wounded thousands including women and unarmed demonstrators in the protests, drawing foreign censure of Israel's deadly tactics.

But the protests appear to be fueled primarily by a desire to ease the blockade.

Low level demonstrations and clashes have continued ever since.

This includes Israeli settlement policies in the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem, as well as the recent round of bloodshed in the Gaza, where Israeli fire killed over 100 Palestinians during mass protests along the Gaza border, Malki added.

But Israel has faced worldwide criticism and calls for an independent investigation over its use of live fire during the protests and clashes along the border.
