Subtropical storm Alberto is pictured nearing the Florida Panhandle on Sunday.

High winds from the storm on Monday caused something unusual at a hotel pool in Panama City Beach.

Initially expected to transition to a tropical storm or hurricane, Alberto formed as a subtropical storm over the western Caribbean on May 25 and made landfall near Panama City, Florida, on May 28 with sustained winds of 45 miles per hour, KCC said.

Although Subtropical Storm Alberto has moved well away from the Big Bend and south Georgia, the outermost rain bands continue to bring rain and breezy winds to the area through the evening.

"However, heavy rainfall from Alberto will spread into northern Georgia, the western Carolinas, and Tennessee on Tuesday, increasing the threat of flash flooding in those areas", the National Weather Service said. "So, we have to get the tourists back". Alberto formed several days ahead of the June 1 official start of the six-month Atlantic hurricane season.

Beachgoers walk on Okaloosa Island in Fort Walton Beach, Florida, Monday, May 28, 2018, as Subtropical Storm Alberto approaches the Gulf Coast.

Along the Florida Panhandle, tourists vowed Alberto wouldn't dampen their vacations. With plenty of available moisture with this system, we could see some locally heavy downpours should you end up under one of these showers.

Hardest hit will be small businesses that expected revenue from Memorial Day weekend tourists, Watson said. They stocked up on groceries and settled in for card games.

Locations expected to see flooding include Asheville, Hendersonville, Rutherfordton, Columbus, Arden, Black Mountain and Mills River in North Carolina.

"There's a lot of flooding going on right now and a lot of issues", said Bobby Alredge, Polk County's emergency management director.

Before Alberto made landfall, another system pounded Maryland with heavy rains. Gusty NE winds will keep it cooler near the Lake & Bay.

Scattered rain and storms continue Wednesday.

The large tree that crushed the TV news vehicle Monday afternoon near Tryon, North Carolina, killed news anchor Mike McCormick and photojournalist Aaron Smeltzer of WYFF-TV of Greenville, South Carolina, the station said.

The duo had just finished interviewing Tryon Fire Chief Geoffrey Tennant, who urged them to be careful with the remnant weather of the storm, according to the Associated Press.

Tennant said the roots of the large tree tore loose from ground saturated by a week's worth of rain.

The men died instantly, their TV vehicle's engine still running, Tennant said.
