  • Alberto is predicted to move over the Tennessee Valley on Tuesday weakening further as it heads toward the Ohio Valley and Great Lakes region

For Central Florida, scattered showers and storms are expected on Monday.

"I'm concerned and I'm listening and that's all I can do take it one step at a time", said Carmella from Saraland, Alabama. Tropical storm warnings were up for parts of the Panhandle and the Alabama coast.

"We are under this tropical-like influence and that is not going to really breakdown this pattern for at least the better part of this week, " said Al Moore, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Columbia.

Thousands of Florida residents evacuated their homes today as Subtropical Storm Alberto drove north through the Gulf of Mexico with forecasters saying it could bring "life-threatening inundation" to southern coastal states.

The storm was about 130 miles west-southwest of Tampa, moving north at 14 mph, the hurricane center said. A tropical storm warning is in effect for a stretch of coastline between Aucilla River in Florida's Big Bend and the Alabama-Florida border.

The mayor of Orange Beach, on Alabama's Gulf Coast, says Subtropical Storm Alberto is bringing rain and aggravation but isn't causing any serious problems in his community. But forecasters said it will dump heavy rain on the Florida Panhandle, raising the risk of flash flooding and storm surges. "Flooding and flash flooding are possible in the southeast United States, including Florida".

As the Gulf Coast endures the first named storm of the 2018 hurricane season, the Carolinas will need to keep an eye out for heavy rain and flooding this week.

In Gulf Shores, Ala., webcams showed beaches beginning to fill up as the storm's track shifted slightly east away from the region, but red flags on the beach warned beach-goers to stay out of the rough water.

Alberto is scheduled to make landfall on the Florida Panhandle early Monday, and the three states likely to bear the brunt of the storm have begun preparing states of emergency.

Normally packed with vacationers over the Memorial Day weekend, beaches along the eastern U.S. Gulf Coast are largely empty as a slowly strengthening storm carrying brisk winds and heavy rain approaches. The tropical system became a subtropical storm Friday, the National Hurricane Center said.

"The impact here will mainly be rain", Kula said. At night, lows will hit near 74.

The National Weather Service's Miami office extended its flood watch in South Florida to 6 p.m. Monday as a result of the storm.

Florida Governor Rick Scott, who issued a state of emergency on Saturday in all of the state's 67 counties, said on Sunday that the Florida National Guard has 5,500 guard members ready to be deployed if needed.
