  • Alberto is predicted to move northward at a faster rate after making landfall in the western Florida Panhandle on Monday

The storm was about 165km south of Apalachicola, Florida, on the Gulf of Mexico coast as of 8pm EDT and was expected to make landfall along the Florida Panhandle on Monday, the US National Hurricane Centre said.

Alberto remains below hurricane strength, but is still expected to gust into the Florida Panhandle with 40-50 miles per hour winds, which could spin up a few isolated tornadoes.

Thousands of Florida residents evacuated their homes today as Subtropical Storm Alberto drove north through the Gulf of Mexico with forecasters saying it could bring "life-threatening inundation" to southern coastal states. The storm could move East later in the week. The rain could lead to flash floods and mudslides on the island.

Continuing on its northward trajectory, Alberto could hit the Florida panhandle Sunday evening or Monday morning, according to AccuWeather.

The storm's remnants could reach Upstate by Wednesday night or Thursday, according to local National Weather Service offices. Rough conditions were expected to roil the seas off the eastern and northern Gulf Coast region through Tuesday. Meanwhile, areas along the Florida Panhandle endured tropical storm conditions as thunderstorms and high winds from the northern bands of the storm reached inland.

Alberto remains miles west of Jacksonville but it dumped about a 1/2 inch to 1 1/2 inches of rain on the region Sunday, said Andrew Kennedy, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Jacksonville. This is the area that has the potential to feel tropical storm force winds.

Lifeguards posted red flags along the white sands of Pensacola Beach, where swimming and wading were banned amid high surf and unsafe conditions.

Weather whiplashed yet? From near 90 Saturday afternoon, to stuck in the 50s yesterday afternoon, it was about as big of a turnaround as you'll see around here as August weather went to April real quick.

Hurricane season in the Atlantic basin officially begins on June 1.

Strong to severe storms will also be possible embedded in the rain on Sunday.

Locally heavy rain can be expected throughout Memorial Day.

Normally packed with vacationers over the Memorial Day weekend, beaches along the eastern U.S. Gulf Coast are largely empty as a slowly strengthening storm carrying brisk winds and heavy rain approaches.

On Saturday, the National Hurricane Center called off the Tropical Storm Watch and Storm Surge Watch for the New Orleans area.

It has been a (mostly) dry holiday weekend, albeit very warm and muggy.
