Horner said he and technical chief Adrian Newey had their own Kranz moment when deciding whether or not to tell Ricciardo to park the auto when the severity of the issue became clear.

Hamilton, who himself remains in negotiations with Mercedes over his new deal, added: "He should definitely have a contract on the table but I was talking to him and I don't know if he has his options planned out".

"I said to Prince Albert the other day maybe it's time to make it longer", he said of the track.

But trouble suddenly struck for the 28-year-old with 50 of this 78-lap marathon race remaining when he reported a loss of engine power.

Ferrari driver Sebastian Vettel qualified second ahead of championship leader Lewis Hamilton's Mercedes.

"Unf*****believable", Ricciardo's team boss Christian Horner said.

"It's almost impossible to overtake, but it's still one of the most fascinating races", Vettel said.

Despite dominating in Monaco, the Red Bull driver refused to get carried away when asked whether he's a realistic contender for this year's title by stating Red Bull had to perform and prove itself on different types of circuits first.

The Mexican thinks Pirelli has done "a good job" with its 2018 tyres generally, but they did not cope with the Monaco race and drivers had to cruise. "We knew that would be the case". The incident followed mistakes in each of the five previous races, leading a frustrated Horner to say Verstappen needed to "stop making these errors".

Brady spent a lot of time with fellow-TAG spokesman Daniel Ricciardo, who won the pole for the Monaco GP.

Vettel was further disadvantaged by the VSC when Stoffel Vandoorne emerged from a pit stop directly ahead of him and slowed the Ferrari just before racing resumed and the track went green.

The young Aussie who was delirious with delight after the Red Bull team that is sponsored by Aston Martin who also supply the engines, Hewlett IBM Citrix among a few.

Max Verstappen was close to his teammate in practice, but a shunt in FP3 caused the Dutchman to miss qualifying, starting from last place.

"The tyre's bad", said Hamilton, who led Bottas in to pit for new hyper-softs. Stroll would soon develop a puncture as a result of contact with Ericsson, and the Ricciardo-Vettel parade would have to dodge him on lap 10. That surely made victory even sweeter on Sunday and his post-race celebration on the Red Bull floating Energy Station, dubbed the "floaterhome", was proof of that.

"You just need to keep it smooth, keep focused".
