A team of U.S. officials crossed into North Korea on Sunday (Monday NZT) for talks to prepare for a summit between President Donald Trump and Kim Jong Un, as both sides press ahead with arrangements despite the question marks hanging over the meeting.

But South Korean President Moon Jae-in said Sunday that the reclusive North Korean leader is indeed committed to a full denuclearization of the peninsula, after the two leaders gathered in an impromptu meeting Saturday in hopes of jump-starting diplomatic talks once more.

State department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said a "US delegation is in ongoing talks with North Korean officials" inside the demilitarised zone between North and South Korea that was created at the end of the Korean War.

Moon and Kim agreed at a surprise second meeting on Saturday that a possible North Korea-US summit, now planned for June 12 in Singapore, must be held successfully, Moon told a news conference in Seoul.

"We're doing very well in terms of the summit with North Korea", Mr Trump said at the White House. "I think the president has got the North Koreans in a place that any other president might not have managed to get done", said Sen. "I think there's a lot of goodwill".

The summit's demise also removes a factor that may have been helping Trump's political prospects domestically.

Sen. Chris Coons, Delaware Democrat, said even offering North Korea a summit with the USA president is a significant concession, while also saying it's important that North Korea has freed several Americans the country was holding as a confidence-building measure.

White House officials said Joe Hagin, a deputy White House chief of staff, is leading a separate delegation in Singapore, where the summit meeting had been scheduled to take place, to work out logistics: when the various meetings would take place, how much would be open to the press, which officials would be in the negotiating rooms, how to handle security concerns.

Trump scrapped the summit after repeated threats by North Korea to pull out over what it saw as confrontational remarks by United States officials demanding unilateral disarmament.

If Trump is unable to negotiate those weapons away and unwilling to live in a world where North Korea poses a nuclear threat, then "you're going to have to do something to go after them at some point", the senator said. So we're looking at June 12th in Singapore.

Former US ambassador to South Korea and nuclear negotiator with the North, Sung Kim, was recalled from his post as Philippines ambassador to lead the preparations, US media reported Monday morning. But Mr Trump short-circuited that process in March, when he abruptly accepted an invitation to meet with Mr Kim.

"It looked like the real Kim Jong Un, but later I realised it's not the real one", said Sagar Admuthe who was visiting from Mumbai, India, after several selfies with the doppleganger against a backdrop of the city's bay.

North Korea had sharply criticised suggestions by Trump's national security adviser, John Bolton, and vice-president Mike Pence that it could share the fate of Libya if it did not swiftly surrender its nuclear arsenal. From North Korea's point of view, a US presence in the country might give Pyongyang a "sense of security" against a possible USA attack. "It hasn't changed. So we'll see what happens".

But within 24 hours he reversed course, saying it could still go ahead after productive talks were held with North Korean officials.
