Today, Danica Patrick returned to the Indianapolis 500 for her last IndyCar race.

Will Power edged Ed Carpenter and Scott Dixon to win the 2018 Indianapolis 500 Sunday at Indianapolis Motor Speedway in Indianapolis, Ind.

"I really don't want to be here", Patrick told reporters.

"The first restart I had behind [Power] I had a good run, I think I could have passed him, and I was like "I'll just sit here and save fuel" and work on him on the exchange".

But that momentum didn't carry through into the race as she was the victim of the second single-car accident within just a handful of laps.

"Unbelievable to be the first Australian to win the 500; maybe they will recognize me down there now", smiled Power. It just didn't come on race day.

"I just screamed like I've never screamed before".

Pole sitter Ed Carpenter finished second, Scott Dixon was third, and 2016 victor Alexander Rossi came from the back of the field to finish fourth. "But I'm grateful for all of it. Wish I could have finished stronger".

"I felt bad when I turned around, and I realized (I hit) her glasses, and she was just covered in milk", Powers said. "But I kind of said before I came here that I feel like if it's a complete disaster - complete like as if not in the ballpark at all, look silly - then people might remember that". Late into the race, everyone was saving fuel, and the guys were telling me that Will and Simon [Pagenaud] were running a lap better than me at that point. I didn't realize she was behind me. You want the guy that deserves it to win and often this race comes down to a bit of a lottery.

Power hits the finish line for victory.

Among other drivers who exited due to mishaps were three-time victor Helio Castroneves (lap 147) and 2013 victor Tony Kanaan (188).

Her crash was third in 20 laps of the race, which also took out defending champion Takuma Sato on lap 48 after running into the back of James Davison in Turn 4.

It's always special to be here at Indy, but I've been with him on four Sunday nights after the race where he's disappointed and we have had a deep-and-meaningful for hours.

But 13 years ago, Patrick was named rookie of the year, had a record-breaking season and led for 19 laps in the Indy 500, as NPR's Cheryl Corley reports. The race capped her "Danica Double", which began at the Daytona 500, where she also crashed out well short of the finish.
