A petition created on Care2 demands that Nike and other sponsors including Under Armour end their ties with the league.

Civil rights activists gathered outside of NFL headquarters and called on team owners to overturn a new policy aimed at stopping player protests during the national anthem.

Sep 24, 2017; Nashville, TN, USA; Tennessee Titans cornerback Logan Ryan (26) tackles Seattle Seahawks wide receiver Doug Baldwin (89) during the second half at Nissan Stadium.

"He's an idiot", Baldwin said of Trump. It is what it is. It's not very American like, actually, to me. It's not what this country was founded on. "It's kind of ironic to me that president of the United States is contradicting what our country is really built on".

The movement to protest police brutality and racial injustice by kneeling during the national anthem first started in 2016 with former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick.

"Players, coaches, management, league management, we feel like we're all partners", he added.

There is still a clear divide that the league has struggled to bridge between itself and its players over the last couple of years.

Hoping to quell the furor started by quarterback Colin Kaepernick two years ago, the National Football League announced Wednesday that players can stay in the locker room during "The Star-Spangled Banner" but must stand if they venture onto the field.

A club will be fined by the League if its personnel are on the field and do not stand and show respect for the flag and the Anthem.

"It might be amusing, for example, to see the owners tied in knots by players who choose to abide by the injunction to "stand and show respect" - while holding black-gloved fists in the air", The Times wrote.

"I never want to put restrictions on the speech of our players", he said. "I think the people pushed it forward", he said.

I would be more OK with [the decision] if they had consulted with the players. I understand it, though. "I don't think it will be an issue at all". But if there is an incident, all eyes will be on the players coming out of the tunnel - or on the players defying the new policy by taking a knee on the sideline.

Many players continued to protest during the national anthem throughout the season, and fan boycotts and more criticism by Trump followed. Yeah, they can still pout in the locker room till their heart's content.

"It is a divisive issue, and it can become a problem internally if not approached right", Armstead said. "I just think that when you love something and you care about it, you want to work to get it right".
