Gun rights, reform groups to meet Texas governor after school shooting

The talks came in the aftermath of Friday's massacre at Santa Fe High School that killed eight children and two teachers in the latest example of the mass shootings that have become a pervasive part of American life. A law enforcement official told CNN that authorities are still trying to determine whether that's the case.

In a letter on Tuesday, Santa Fe School District Superintendent Leigh Wall said that Santa Fe High School's graduation will be held at 7:30 p.m. on June 1 at Joe Raitano Memorial Stadium.

Ditto the five states that now have laws prohibiting bump stocks, the attachments that allow semi-automatic weapons to work like machine guns, like the one used by Stephen Paddock to kill 58 people and wound hundreds more in Las Vegas. Somebody probably came and hurt him, and since he was a solid boy, I don't know what could have happened. He is charged with capital murder of multiple people and aggravated assault on a public servant but has not entered a plea.

Antonios Pagourtzis said his son never displayed any signs that he would be capable of such violence, explaining that he didn't fight with others, didn't drink alcohol and seemed to enjoy healthy pursuits such as working out. He said he wants to apologize to his sisters.

"I can't believe it could have been any of us at the school, we need to make [a] change now", he added.

Dimitrios told an investigator he acted alone and spared people he liked because he wanted his story told, according to a probable cause affidavit. Abbott said he'll meet Wednesday with gun rights and gun control advocacy groups and Thursday with victims of the attack at Santa Fe High School and the November attack on a church in Sutherland Springs.

Houston Texans star J.J. Watt visited victims of a school shooting in Texas at the hospital this week.

The suspect won't face the death penalty if he is convicted. On Tuesday, Texas student activists placed an open letter to Governor Greg Abbott in the Houston Chronicle, accusing him of not doing enough to protect them.

Abbott and Texas Republicans have embraced a steady relaxation of gun laws in recent years.

Among the measures coming out of the meeting that Abbott said he would like to see implemented quickly were expanding school safety training programs, bolstering threat assessment systems and expanding a pilot program created to screen for students who might be a threat to themselves or others.

After 17 people were shot dead at a Parkland, Florida high school in February, lawmakers in that southeastern state approved new, albeit limited, gun restrictions. "The reality is that we all want guns out of the hands of people who want to murder our children".

Earlier this month at the National Rifle Association's annual meeting in Dallas, Abbott himself said, "The problem is not guns". State Rep. Chris Turner of Grand Prairie, chairman of the House Democratic Caucus, said Friday that the state should also pass universal background checks and require the reporting of stolen guns.

On Wednesday, district teachers and support staff will return to school, the district said.
