Kim summit set for June 12 in Singapore

  • Trump welcomes Americans home

Kim has said that North Korea now has the capability to strike the continental United States.

The Panmunjom Declaration was announced on April 27 after the third inter-Korean summit between South Korean President Moon Jae-in and top DPRK leader Kim Jong Un, agreeing to complete denuclearization and the adjustment of the current armistice agreement to a peace treaty by the end of this year.

Here is a look back at the 18-month diplomatic roller-coaster that took Trump and Kim from rhetorical warfare to the verge of the first summit between a sitting USA president and a North Korean leader, set for June 12 in Singapore.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo flew to Pyongyang to bring them home, and Trump was there to meet them when they arrived before dawn Thursday at Joint Base Andrews outside Washington.

To resolve humanitarian issues, the two sides will hold a reunion of families separated across the border around the August 15 Liberation Day, when the Korean Peninsula was liberated from Japanese colonial from 1910-45.

South Korean President Moon Jae-in's administration is conducting its own efforts to normalize ties on the divided peninsula and secure lasting peace.

As 2017 draws to a close, Kim boasts his missile arsenal can hit any city on the U.S. mainland, warning in a New Year address that he has a "nuclear button" on his desk.

But both Washington and Seoul - longtime treaty allies - cooperate closely and also confer with the North's larger neighbor China, which has a stake in the outcome.

Trump told one confidant that he now believes a deal with North Korea, rather than in the Middle East, could be his historic victory.

White House national security adviser John Bolton said Sunday on CNN's "State of the Union" that North Korea's prospects are "unbelievably strong if they'll commit to denuclearization".

South Korean Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha stressed that sanctions against Pyongyang would not be lifted until it had taken concrete steps to denuclearize.

"My only hope is with President Trump", said Hwang In-cheol, the son of a broadcast journalist whose flight was hijacked by a North Korean operative almost 50 years ago.

"The release of the three detainees does not absolve the regime of a history of human rights abuses that must be the topic of any discussion going forward on normalising political relations between the United States and North Korea". The majority of people in North Korea live in poverty.

"I think it will be a big success", Trump said as he boarded Air Force One, on his way to a political rally in Indiana.

There are things to buy - but only for some people, those who have money. "I would say that Iran and North Korea probably (have) taken up over half of my time, and a lot of that obviously is - is helping him make the decisions and get ready for these meetings".

When Trump and Kim do sit down a month from now, the two relatively untested leaders will be presented with a puzzle that has stymied seasoned diplomats for decades.

Japan, China and South Korea agreed in a trilateral leaders' summit on Wednesday in Tokyo that they will work toward the peninsula's denuclearisation in a rare show of unity.

Former presidents Bill Clinton and Jimmy Carter visited after leaving office.

If there is a comprehensive solution to North Korea, it will take years to achieve and go through several hard phases.

Journalists asked Pompeo what such a denuclearization would look like and if it meant carrying out inspections in North Korean nuclear plants.

In North Korea's bombastic rhetoric, "denuclearization" has, for years, been a byword for U.S. troop withdrawals from South Korea.
