The Iran nuclear deal should be preserved despite the USA decision to withdraw from it, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Thursday.

The Russian Foreign Ministry released a statement Thursday following a meeting between diplomatic leaders between Russia and Iran stating they will "continue closely coordinating their efforts" with Iran on the JCPOA.

The Kremlin meanwhile accused Trump of "veiled protectionism" by pulling out of the deal. During the consultations in Tehran, the issue of maintaining the agreement on the Iranian nuclear program was discussed, as well as overcoming the consequences of USA economic sanctions on Tehran.

A day after Trump's controversial decision, which triggered worldwide condemnations, Russian President Vladimir Putin voiced his "deep concern" over his American counterpart's withdrawal from the accord.

All of the U.S.'s negotiating partners - the U.K., France, Germany, Russia, China and the European Union - had agreed that maintaining the JCPOA was the best way to reign in Iran's program.

Additionally on Thursday, Russia's Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov also strongly urged the countries that oversaw the accord to "develop steps that would preserve this document that is important for regional stability".

Lavrov said Russian Federation values Iran's "balanced" position and will hold consultations on the future of the pact with the other signatories.
