Doctors and pharmacies are strengthening opioid policies following a suggestion to do so by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in 2016.

The dosage for opioid prescriptions will be restricted to the equivalent of 50 morphine milligrams per day, the store said.

Further, as of January 1, 2020, Walmart and Sam's Club will require e-prescriptions for controlled substances. Along with reducing the risk of errors, e-prescriptions can not be altered or copied and are electronically trackable, according to the company.

Walmart Inc. announced Monday that the company will introduce new policies to restrict opioid prescriptions at all Walmart and Sam's Club pharmacies. Aetna said in December it would waive copays for Narcan, a brand name for the opioid overdose-reversal medication naloxone, and would limit first-time opioid prescriptions.

Pharmacists also will undergo a pain management curriculum, using the CDC's guidelines on pain management to counsel patients.

With 5,300 stores in the U.S., Walmart is one of the largest distributors of prescription drugs in the country.

Marybeth Hays, Walmart's executive VP of health and wellness and consumables, was quoted stating that the company is taking action in the fight against the nation's opioid epidemic.

Walmart said it offers DisposeRx, a powder for disposing of opioids, free in all of its pharmacies.

Florida and several other states have passed similar measures to limit patients' supply of opioids in an effort to reduce the risk of addiction and misuse.

CVS Health said in September that it would limit opioid prescriptions to seven-day supplies for new patients with particular acute conditions. Each week, over 260 million customers and members visit our more than 11,600 stores under almost 60 banners in 28 countries and eCommerce websites. Walmart continues to be a leader in sustainability, corporate philanthropy and employment opportunity.
