Among the things the technology giant first showcased at the event are the new features that are coming to the Google Maps app this year. What else do you want Google Maps to do?

Google Maps, like Google News, is also gaining a new "For You" feature where you'll find recommendations based on your past travel.

Group planning of a meal or activity will get easier because you'll be able to long press on the places you're interested in to add them to a shortlist that you can share with your friends or family. When checking out a specific area, Google Maps can list out the top things to do in that area, such as activities and places to eat.

Finally, Google Maps is gaining new social features, including the ability for multiple users to vote on where to go for dinner. Machine learning will be used to calculate the score, based on information about the business, your food and drink preferences, places you've been, and previous ratings you've given. This way it would be harder to misinterpret the directions the app is giving users because every turn they make will be guided by AR navigation signs and symbols.

Lastly, Google is also adding a few augmented reality (AR) features. To do this, Google developed what it's calling VPS, Visual Positioning System, which improves upon the typical GPS experience by analyzing the landmarks around the user to determine the exact location. First, there's a new tab in Maps called "For you" that shows a user new places opening nearby, what's trending in the area, as well as personal recommendations.

Be on the lookout for these changes in the coming months.

Google Maps is getting several new updates at the company's Google I/O 2018 annual developer conference. If you regularly peruse the star ratings of various restaurants before you decide where to go, then you know that those ratings can only tell you so much.
